Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi says his government plans to lease 10 more islets to domestic and foreign investors for putting up heavy tourism investments. In Dec. 2021, Zanzibar authorities announced they have leased 10 islets to domestic and foreign investors to spur the blue economy.

“Investments on these islets will highly take into account protection of the environment,” President Mwinyi said last week in his monthly press conference for editors from various media outlets. Mwinyi allayed fears raised by some people that Zanzibar authorities were selling the islets to investors, saying the islets are for leasing and not for sale. He said the process to lease the 10 islets has started, including advertising them to prospective bidders.

Sharif Ali Sharif, the executive director of the Zanzibar Investment Promotion Authority (ZIPA), said the islets have been leased to investors in efforts aimed at opening up investment opportunities. “Investments to be put up on the 10 islets are intended to support the Zanzibar government’s intention to improve and promote the blue economy,” said Sharif. He said a total of 53 investment companies, both domestic and foreign, applied to run investments on the islets, including the construction of tourist hotels and coral parks.
