The honeymoon is over for one of the co-principals in the One Kenya Alliance (OKA), Wiper leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka. Mr Musyoka, a former Vice President to retired Present Mwai Kibaki 2007-12, faces a huge political storm in his Kamba home-turf. A frustrated Kalonza Musyoka, renowned for his indecisiveness, blowing hot and cold insists that his name will be on the ballot for the presidency in August.

Some Kamba leaders have issued demands to other OKA leaders to name their man as the alliance flag-bearer failure to which they will chart their own destiny! The Wiper leader claims to be the senior-most co-principal in OKA, but so does ANC boss Musalia Mudavadi also a former VP under the late President Daniel arap Moi having served for just a few months in (2001) and deputy Prime Minister 2008-12.

Both Mutua and Kibwana are presidential candidates in the August poll but they are widely touted to be leaning towards front runner Raila Odinga’s Azimio

For some time now the soft-spoken Musyoka has been seating pretty as revolt after revolt rocked Mudavadi’s ANC party, now the two men are facing a growing rebellion that has whittled down the OKA clout, Mudavadi has lost key allies in Lugari MP Ayub Savula and nominated MP Osotsti both critical defections ahead of the August poll. In Musyoka’s Kamba-land governors Alfred Mutua (Machakos), Prof. Kivutha Kibwana (Makueni) and Charity Ngilu (Kitui) have taken the bull by the horns!

Both Mutua and Kibwana are presidential candidates in the August poll but they are widely touted to be leaning towards front runner Raila Odinga’s Azimio. The Kamba governors hosted a regional meeting in Kitui and agreed on a united strategy in the 2022 elections. There was no mention of Mr Musyoka whose Wiper party is the most dominant political vehicle in the region.

The rebellion has weakened OKA even as former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and deputy president William Ruto raid their respective home turfs. But as the three Kamba bigwigs met without even inviting any Wiper official including its administrator Insurance magnate M/S Agatha Solitei, Musyoka was in Mukuru slums condemning evictions that had left hundreds of people homeless. He commiserated with families but did not give out any relief food or blankets as expected.

It’s no accident that most of the heavily congested Mukuru kwa Njenga slum dwellers are Kambas who hold a critical block of votes in Nairobi. They are said to have voted almost to a man for ousted Nairobi governor Mike Sonko in 2017.
