Senator Kindiki first leaked the document to Musalia Mudavadi with a rider that he must not share it with anyone else. But Musalia gave the document to a journalist from the mainstream media who published it to show his support base in western Kenya that he had bargained well
Intrigues and deeply entrenched political maneuvres seem to have been at play in the choice of William Ruto’s long-awaited announcement of his deputy in the 2022 general elections. DP William Ruto fought off Internal rifts to declare Mr Nderitu Gachagua as his deputy. Mr Gachagua is a former District Commissioner in the former Kakamega district.
The matter of Ruto’s deputy in the next elections had been kept as a top-secret between three individuals, Deputy President Ruto, Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki and the Registrar of Political Parties Ann Nderitu. For unknown reasons, the document was leaked to the Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi by Senator Kindiki. Muasalia had earlier expressed his fears to close friends that the final document filed with the Register of Political Parties may have been altered as compared to the one he had, he pressed Mr Kindiki for a copy of the document with the Register only to confirm his worst fears. Musalia’s ANC party and Ford-Kenya, both from the vote-rich western Kenya are banking on Ruto taking power in August, the deal as deposited with the register of political parties says that 30 per cent of top government jobs would go to the two parties, and the leak was widely publicized.
The Weekly Vision’s mole in DP Ruto’s camp that cannot be named for personal security and job considerations said: “Senator Kindiki first leaked the document to Mudavadi on condition that he must not share it with anyone else. Musalia however leaked it to the mainstream media probably to show his support base in western Kenya that he had bargained well. But the move backfired badly when Central Kenya MPs demanded their fair share in Ruto’s ‘government’. The Deputy President launched an internal audit to find out who had leaked the document to the media only to discover that it was his lawyer, Senator Kindiki. When it was discovered that Kindiki was responsible for the blatant leakage of an internal secret document to the media, the DP became furious and promised to hit back.” “That is one of the reasons why DP Ruto decided to pick Gachagua because Kindiki could not be trusted with confidential information. The Deputy President was heard asking how many secrets of national security importance can he leak” posed our source.
William Ruto eventually settled on Mr Gachagua as his DP, a man who defected and betrayed his political mentor, President Uhuru Kenyatta who had promoted him to a key national office at State House Nairobi. The fact remains that the move by Senator Kindiki was deemed as a betrayal of the highest order with adverse impacts and consequences not only to the UDA party and its leaders but also to the person responsible for the leakage of the top-secret.
Mr Gachagua was at one time a controversial District Officer of Navaholo Division in the former populous and large Kakamega district under the old Constitutional dispensation before jumping into Mt. Kenya politics courtesy of President Kenyatta. The bottom line is that even before the whole secret exploded into the public domain with virtually all mainstream media outlet’s headlines, Gachagua and Kindiki had been mentioned as DP Ruto’s choices for a running mate at the August 9th, 2022 general election.
Yesterday’s development from DP Ruto’s camp was a slap in Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru’s face, she is a former close ally and beneficiary of President Kenyatta’s support for her political ascendency, who turned to rebel Deputy President Ruto and has since publicly declared her interest in being Ruto’s DP.
Waiguru is publicly known to have had a close personal relationship with President Kenyatta that saw her appointed the first Cabinet Secretary for Devolution in Kenyatta’s first cabinet that eventually saw her implicated in the multi-million shillings ghost supplies to the National Youth Service under her docket.
Ruto’s choice of Gachagua sharply brings into focus the fate of ANC leader Mudavadi and his Ford-K colleague Wetangula. For Musalia another spectre of a repeat of when the late retired former President Daniel Arap Moi railroaded him to be President Kenyatta as his running mate in the 2002 general elections on a Kanu ticket. The late President Mwai Kibaki won the elections on a wheelchair after Raila Odinga’s public declaration of “Kibaki Tosha.”
