Why Karua’s Support for Mr Odinga Is Political Double Speak

To hear Martha Karua sounding the drums in support of a Raila Odinga presidential aspiration would have sounded like political blasphemy back in 2007. Back then, she stuck her neck out for President Mwai Kibaki during vote counting and tallying at KICC.

The initial results seemed to show Kibaki was headed for a heavy defeat. He would have been Kenya’s first president to serve one term.

Raila Odinga of ODM appeared to be roaring to a decisive victory against incumbent Mwai Kibaki of PNU as results filtered in from different parts of the country, but in a surprise move, Kibaki who was then trailing Mr Odinga by more than a million votes, suddenly started closing the gap! Within a couple of hours as election commission boss Samuel Kivuiti announced results, President Kibaki slashed Mr Odinga’s lead blow after blow!

Fifteen years to a day and Matha Karau is singing in praise of Mr Odinga warmly describing him as “Baba wa wazalendo”, a freedom fighter, a man who paid a high price for good governance!

It was a fierce Martha Karau who told off James Orengo, William Ruto and other Orange party hardliners at KICC to stop “bickering” over results from Tharaka Nithi and Imenti Central that gave Kibaki a sudden lead!

This was too much for Odinga who had already prepared an acceptance speech, and victory celebrations. Mr Kibaki was quietly sworn in as president at Statehouse as dusk was falling.

An unrelenting Matha Karau insisted that the “high vote tally” in Kibaki’s strongholds could be easily verified but Odinga’s Rift Valley strongman William Ruto insisted the election had been “stolen.” The rest is history.

Fifteen years to a day and Matha Karau is singing in praise of Mr Odinga warmly describing him as “Baba wa wazalendo”, a freedom fighter, a man who paid a high price for good governance! Like the proverbial chameleon, politicians seem to be always able to switch allegiance with amazing rapidity to suit their surroundings!
