President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda probably wishes he could do more than just hosting Deputy President William Ruto during the now frequent visits to Kampala. Political watchers in Kampala and Nairobi say President Museveni would like nothing better than seeing Kenya’s Deputy President Ruto become president as soon as now.

Museveni has no love lost for Kenya’s opposition chief Raila Odinga who has kept dismissing periodic elections in Kampala as a “sham” with a pre-determined result for the incumbent. Odinga also accuses Museveni of annexing the tiny Mighingo island and harassing Kenyan fishermen on Lake Victoria. It’s noteworthy that William Ruto has never raised the controversial issue of Mighingo, leaving Uganda army and police a field day.

Experts warn that William Ruto’s ascendancy to the presidency, even to the most optimistic will be no walk in the park, especially as he faces a massively growing political alliance he has always dubbed “dynasties” that he accuses is determined to ensure he fails in his mission.

Occupation of State House in Nairobi where only four men have ever occupied as presidents in 61 remains Ruto’s most endearing dream. But it could remain just that- a long-treasured dream that boomerangs in solid defeat at the 2022 elections if certain factors remain constant.

Ruto is roundly accused of “grand corruption” in government where key aides have been kicked out and charged in court. DP William Ruto’s main challenger ODM leader Raila Odinga, has kept warning that he should prepare “to rot in jail” once he Raila lands the presidency. Similar calls have been made by COTU boss Francis Atwoli a fierce Ruto critic. Mr Atwoli recently told an international media forum in Nairobi that if elected president, Ruto will likely transfer the Central Bank of Kenya to his rural Sugoi home!

Such attacks amidst systematic side-lining in government by his boss President Uhuru who was recently in France may have been going through the DP’s mind, as he took time off to visit President Museveni’s home district of Mbarara. Dr Ruto is said to be “clinging” on an “empty shell” as second in command, with no official docket worth writing home about.
