Long lost former KANU era strongman of the Moi era Fred Gumo is back, and in typical style with a huge bang! The stern-faced Gumo of the “kaa ngumu” fame resurfaced during Raila Odinga’s foray into the vote-rich Mount Kenya region last week.

Mr Gumo who served as the chairman of the Nairobi City Commission in the 1980’s, accompanied former prime minister Raila Odinga on a tour of Nyeri County, home to Kenya’s 3rd president, Mwai Kibaki. The former minister in Moi’s government told the huge political rally in Nyeri that Mr Odinga worked well with President Mwai Kibaki 2008-12, as opposed to what is happening today where Deputy President William Ruto has shown little respect for his boss President Uhuru Kenyatta.

“Why has Ruto not given out Tuk Tuks, Boda Boda, 4×4 Prados or even helicopters?” pondered Odinga who trashed the “hustler” ideology as “taka taka”!

Mr Gumo claimed that Ruto had only used his office to “loot” public coffers! “It is this stolen money that he is splashing around in campaigns,” Gumo said. Mr Gumo warned that if DP Ruto assumed State Power, he may end up “mortgaging” the whole country! An attentive Raila silently listened as speaker after speaker tore into Ruto’s wheelbarrow hustler ideology.

Many challenged Ruto to explain why he thinks well educated unemployed Kenyans only need “wheelbarrows” to advance their dreams! They said Ruto with a doctorate in plant ecology should know better than reducing youth to a life of cart pushers”!

Those opposed to DP Ruto’s brand of politics are said to have questioned his sincerity in pushing the wheelbarrow narrative aimed at the youth from Mount Kenya region while at the same time pushing for a different tune soon after he lands in his Rift Valley political home turf where he sings a different tune, that of education to the youth from the area.

“Why has he not given out Tuk Tuks, Boda Boda, 4×4 Prados or even helicopters?” pondered Odinga who trashed the “hustler” ideology as “taka taka”! The DP was challenged to stop playing with the intelligence of unemployed youth who are what they are because of a “failed economy”!

As Kenya’s number two in command Mr Odinga said, there was no way Ruto could escape blame for not steering the country in the right direction. “He should stop whining about being side-lined in government,” said Odinga adding the best thing would have been to quit if he had become “jobless” at the Harambee Annex!

“Why does he draw a monthly salary, enjoy free housing, bodyguards, and a retinue of staff courtesy of the same government he’s busy bashing, yet doing no work at his office” fumed Raila. He said no Kenyan parent educates his children to become “wheel-barrow pushers” which is due to lack of opportunities.

As if to pre-empt such attacks, Ruto recently claimed he has not been campaigning since 2018 as his critics allege. The DP claims he has been “launching state projects”!
