The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is the most popular political party in Busia County, judging by past election cycles where the party has always managed to bag most of the elective seats on offer.

The Orange party may this time around find itself on unfamiliar ground in Busia County, reports suggest that supporters could opt to back a candidate for governor who will be contesting on a different political outfit, assuming the party’s nomination process fails to meet the transparency test as it has happened before.

Party supporters on the ground have expressed fears, ‘’saying the party’s top hierarchy in Nairobi may force an unpopular candidate down our throats just to be seen as being gender-sensitive’’. They say one of the candidates is a “foreigner” who does not understand our way of life! They have vowed to resist the attempt by all means possible.

Heading into the polls, ODM has attracted three serious candidates for the position of governor; they are Moses Mulomi, currently serving as deputy governor, Paul Otuoma and Busia Woman Rep. Florence Mwikali Mutua.

Mutua has also come under heavy criticism, being accused of having shortchanged the locals when she denied some of them a chance to serve as nominated MCA’s, instead handing the slots to foreigners some of whom had never been to Busia before

Ongoing discussion on social media platforms and among the public indicate that most of the party’s supporters look at Florance Mutua with a lot of suspicions putting her in a very precarious position. The party supporters have openly declared that they will only vote for a local person as governor, adding that Mutua can’t be entrusted with such a senior position.

Florence Mutua is believed to be from Makueni County, hundreds of kilometres away from Busia. Mutua has also come under heavy criticism, being accused of having shortchanged the locals when she denied some of them a chance to serve as nominated MCA’s, instead handing the slots to foreigners some of whom had never been to Busia before, they first came here to be sworn in as MCAs.

“I can’t vote for that woman, she will employ foreigners in the County,” said Joseph Ojiambo, a Boda Boda rider from Budalang’i. Social media platforms like Facebook and Whatsapp are abuzz with negative comments against her candidature.

“In the 2022 elections, no matter the party, I will vote for a person whose grandfather’s remains were buried in Busia,” wrote Bahati Opetu, an ardent ODM supporter.
