Vigilance house on the spot over homicide cases within the police service

Interior CS Fred Matiang’i accompanied by Police IG Hillary Mutyambai meet senor government officials including CS Eugene Wamalwa

Growing cases of homicides among police officers in Kenya is a cause for concern, Interior cabinet secretary Fred Matiangi and Inspector general of police Hillary Matumbayi must find workable solutions to stop the killings.

CS Fred Matiangi’s order that officers shouldn’t “marry fellow officers” or even have affairs between themselves falls flat on its face as no one can legislate “matters of the heart.” MUHURI and People Against Torture activists faulted the CS for “chest-thumping” on issues without delving into the root causes and finding long-lasting solutions.

“You are officers, we don’t expect you to leave here and go have affairs with constables who you are managing, when it gets to that level one of you has to leave,” Matiang’i stated during a past press briefing.

This follows a case where a female police officer is alleged to have killed his male colleague within Kasarani police station in Nakuru County on Monday. Reports indicate that corporal Caroline Kangogo, the suspect, was married to a senior police officer who is not attached to the station. This was confirmed by another officer who sought anonymity due to the sensitivity of the case at hand. Source intimated that Kangogo had an intimate relationship with the deceased, constable John Ogweno.

Police stations have become a hotbed in crimes of passion involving junior and senior officers resulting in the growing number of homicides case in which many officers have lost their lives as they seek to settle scores with the barrel of the gun.

A senior police officer told this writer that “She must have shot him at close range”. The shooter first broke the driver’s window before shooting Ogweno. Other officers who are residents within the station said that they never heard shots from the parking lot despite their houses been close by.

Kangogo has been identified as the prime suspect concerning the murder. A report was released urging Kenyans to share any information regarding her whereabouts as she is armed and dangerous.
