Trouble looms in OKA as former KRA boss set to release ‘Pandora Tax Papers’ dossier

President Uhuru Kenyatta may already have decided to play “hardball” to force the principal of the One Kenya Alliance outfit to back Raila Odinga’s bid for the presidency. A seemingly frustrated President Kenyatta has time and again tried to convince the five OKA co-principals to back down and support Mr Oding’s bid in 2022 but his efforts seem to have hit a brick wall, at least for now.

According to well-placed sources familiar with the unfolding Uhuru Kenyatta succession politics, the president is falling back on the “time tested” Moi era arm twisting tactics.

Former KRA boss Michael Waweru

Retired tax-man who was at the helm of KRA during Mwai Kibaki’s presidency Michael Waweru is about to spill some quite disturbing data on key figures, according to a well-placed source. Mr Waweru is widely credited with expanding the tax bracket during the Kibaki regime. It was under his watch that KRA collected enough revenue to run the government without borrowing much from international lenders. The former top tax-man is privy to some “tax evasion” intrigues touching on senior OKA principals.

In 2001 at a time when it appeared like Musalia Mudavadi would join the rebellion in the then ruling party KANU over “project Uhuru” President Moi is said to have dangled the “tax evasion” threat against him, this worked. The tax-man had gone for Musalia’s businesses interests based in Westlands, Nairobi

OKA hardliners who have in the past told off the president about backing Raila’s 2022 presidential bid include Musalia Mudavadi of ANC. Mr Mudavadi just like his Wiper party counterpart Kalonzo Musyoka declined repeated requests to back down and support Mr Odinga.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has reportedly ordered his handlers to prepare and assemble “Moi style” old skeletons using the retired top tax-man. In 2001 at a time when it appeared like Musalia Mudavadi would join the rebellion in the then ruling party KANU over “project Uhuru” President Moi is said to have dangled the “tax evasion” threat against him, this worked. The tax-man had gone for Musalia’s businesses interests based in Westlands, Nairobi which include an upscale multi-storied shopping mall. The business is run by his wife and it includes a five-star hotel and bar.

It’s not clear at the moment whether the president will also go for the “NYS skeletons” to tame the flip-flopping Kalonzo Musyoka who is still sticking to his guns. Both men have been running-mates to Raila Odinga in the past, Kalonzo (2013) and Mudavadi (2017) on both occasions their regions voted overwhelmingly for Raila.

Mr Odinga is alive to the unpredictable voting patterns in the Mount Kenya region and has been advised to bank more on traditional political strongholds. But things have since changed diametrically as the gospel singer likes to put it “bindu bichenjenga”! A re-energised Odinga is set to launch his 2022 presidential bid this Friday and the move could spell doom for the OKA principals if they fail to move fast and join Mr Odinga before then.
