A titanic political battle to dislodge Trans Nzoia County women representative Janet Wanyama Nangabo from her seat has intensified, this time with several aspirants flexing their political muscles while banking on Azimio Presidential Candidate Raila Odinga, President Uhuru Kenyatta and his DP William Ruto.

The incumbent officeholder is defending her seat as an independent candidate after being denied the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) ticket by the ‘’owners. This was after a Nairobi businesswoman Fanice Khatundi, her main challenger was given the nod to fly the ‘’leopard party ticket in absentia during a meeting at Chui house in Nairobi where the women representative was boldly told that she was unsuitable.

The DAP-K ticket had attracted the likes of Nangabo, Khatundi, Sussan Nelima and Esther Olenje Koli. Esther Koli and Sussan Murumba decamped to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s revamped Jubilee party after seeing early warning signs of the ‘’ Cat and mouse endless chase games in the Democratic Action Party of Kenya.

Nangabo and Khatundi who remained in the party could however not agree to let one of them go for the seat with Nangabo who enjoys the power of incumbency saying she was better placed to successfully get back her seat, a matter no one in the party could give ear to.

The woman representative chose to go the independent way. ‘’ Even after being advised to quit UDA on the promissory note of being given a direct ticket someone without shame tells me that I’m unsuitable! My calls for nomination were rejected by those calling themselves party owners’’, she said. Nangabo said: ‘’ If you are a man and you allow yourself to be used to bring me down simply because I’m a woman in the race you are not vying then you have a problem. What goes around will come back to you’’, she said without expounding.

Nangabo who was elected in 2013 on the New Ford Kenya ticket is a dangerous political chessboard player and shouldn’t be underrated owing to her experience among all those in the race. Former County Executive Member of public Service management in Trans Nzoia County Sussan Murumba has also rolled up her sleeves to dislodge the incumbent. Murumba has already secured the Jubilee ticket.

Murumba told Azimio affiliate parties to shelve their ambitions for the seat since DAP-K was already fielding former Rift Valley Regional Commissioner as its Azimio candidate for Trans Nzoia. ‘’ We must sober ourselves up and desist from this political lust for everything. DAP K must not think every seat is up for its aspirants’ grabs’’, she said during a service at the Kitale Salvation Army Corps Sunday service. Nangabo told The Weekly Vision that she is prepared to face off her opponents at the ballot.

The Woman representative is known for her well-crafted Bukusu sayings and good oratory skills that have endeared her with the electorate. she is banking on her experience and development record to outsmart her rivals.

Mr John Oduor of ODM demanded that Naomi Okul be the sole Azimio candidate for the WR seat in Trans Nzoia, this political glutton where a single political establishment wants all seats from MCA to Governor is uncalled for

The women representative on the other hand has decided to work with Kiminini Legislator Dr Chris Wamalwa who is also an aspirant for the County’s top seat under the Kenya Kwanza Political realignment.

The new political kid in the race is Lilian Chebet Siyoi, a shrewd businesswoman who launched her campaigns in Kitale last month, expressing optimism that she will beat all her opponent’s pants down come 9th August.

Others in the race include Dr Susan Nakumicha (Ford Kenya), Noami Okul Wanjala (ODM) and Eunice Karanja (Service Party of Kenya). ODM Candidate Naomi Wanjala Okul who once served as the Maendeleo ya Wanawake National Treasurer is not taking chances, this time saying she is optimistic about clinching the seat. Mr John Oduor of ODM demanded that Naomi Okul be the sole Azimio candidate for the WR seat in Trans Nzoia, this political glutton where a single political establishment wants all seats from MCA to Governor is uncalled for.

Okul is credited for mentoring young women who found themselves nominated to the former defunct Kitale Municipal Council and Nzoia County Council respectively.

‘’ I mentored many women including Margaret Odembo who was by then a tailor in Kitale town and assisted her to be nominated as a councillor. Leadership is all about letting those you feel are capable have a chance ‘’, she said.

Tribe and party are some of the factors likely to influence the outcome

The Bukusu community has the numerical advantage and the vote is expected to be split among the contestants from the community’s names, Nangabo, Murumba and Nakumicha. Dr Nakhumicha is vying for the second time on the Simba Party. ‘’ I’m in this race to win against all odds, nothing is going to stop me from winning’’, she said. The youthful doctor enjoys the support of her party Ford Kenya which she has stuck to even after failing to clinch the seat twice.

Karanja who is taking a stab at the coveted seat for the third time enjoys commands a larger following from her ‘’ Nyumba ya Mumbi’’ community which is expected to vote for her as a block as one way of sharing the County’s cake. Siyoi will enjoy the support from her Sabaot community and that of her Bukusu husband Walubengo Wa Mang’oli who is also a shrewd businessman commanding respect in the community.
