Like it or not some Kenyans associate Nigerian nationals with engaging in shady deals, whether in drug trafficking to the printing of fake cash, the West Africans always stand out. This social stigma about Nigerians has seen many Kenyans raise their guard on anything involving them.

Oil-rich Nigeria is Africa’s most populous country with the continents largest economy yet her nationals are all over the world being arrested and charged for pushing drugs. Many have wondered why Nigerians are always up to some “mischief” and it is with this mindset that a section of Kenyans raised eyebrows at the wedding of Kenya’s Deputy President William, Ruto’s daughter to a Nigerian tycoon.

Online bloggers derided the DP for ‘selling off” his daughter to a business associate who helps him run multi-billion-shilling businesses spread around the world. Several Nigerians are languishing in Kenyan jails over drug trafficking and many here keep asking themselves as to why citizens of Africa’s largest economy prefer white-collar crime, many Nigerians have also been linked to cyber-crime syndicates, hacking and stealing cash online.

Many will agree, nothing cements a political alliance and close ties than social gatherings like weddings, church service and funerals as avenues for milking publicity for future goals. Such is the politics of gauging visibility and absence as factors in defining a political direction that when key figures fail to show up at functions they are invited to attend, eyebrows are raised and rumour mills work overtime!

It is instructive to note that President Kenyatta attended the graduation of his deputy in 2019 when Ruto was awarded a PhD in Plant Ecology by the University of Nairobi, Uhuru congratulated his deputy as he wondered out loud asking where his DP had found time to study and do research, he also added that now knew where Ruto goes when he is “tanga tangaring!” This brought down political temperatures between former close allies now drifting apart, being seen together brought the assumption among their supporters that they were “still one”.

But later the cold war escalated fanned by opposition ODM with matters almost coming to ugly proportions. Only for Uhuru to walk to the office of his deputy and share lunch as they chatted animatedly! The soaring political temperatures not only came down but rumour mills claimed the two men have been together all along and that Uhuru was “fooling” Raila who was being fattened for “electoral slaughter” in 2022!

The cold war in Jubilee party seems to have erupted afresh. Many are reading volumes in the decision of President Kenyatta to snub an event at his deputy’s Karen home despite the latter attending the 18th National prayer Breakfast from where they could have proceeded to the event.

Sources told this writer that invitation cards had been sent out weeks in advance and that even Ruto talked to his boss about this as they sat at the same table during the National Prayer Breakfast. That Uhuru chose to skip an event that would have helped thaw the frosty political relations with his deputy has baffled many. Some even assumed Uhuru’s handshake partner Raila Odinga would set aside differences with Ruto and attend the colourful wedding of the DP daughter.

Politics especially in Kenya is about visibility and many say Uhuru-Raila missed a golden chance to mend fences with the DP whose increasing political clout in Central Kenya has alarmed the handshake team plotting to succeed Kenyatta in 2022.

June Ruto who is attached to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs wedded her Nigerian lover Alexander Ezenagu at her father’s private residence in Karen at what has been termed as the wedding of the year! A broadly smiling Ruto with a Stetson hat walked his daughter down the aisle in the invites-only private wedding. Kenyatta and Odinga were also absent at the engagement bash of these lovebirds two weeks ago.

President Kenyatta publicly congratulated the DP ahead of the wedding and promised to invite them for a meeting when his schedule allows. “Pongezi tena saana (Congratulations)… you will tell them…nitawaona nikitoka Kisumu (I will see them when I come back from Kisumu),” he told Ruto. Politicians present at the event included Musalia Mudavadi, Kipchumba Murkomen, Aaron Cheruiyot, Oscar Sudi, Caleb Kositany, and Stephen Sang. Tellingly, Mudavadi encouraged leaders to put their differences aside and attend such important occasions.

“Indeed, family ties are key in building societal values. As leaders, we should sometimes rise above the din of politics and instead nurture that which unites us. Having time for our families is key in upholding family values in our society. I wish the newly-wed couple a happy and prosperous life together,” he said.
