A Kenyan citizen has once again raised the red flag over the mushrooming of restaurants in Nairobi operated by Somalis, some of whom can’t speak Swahili or even English.

He said many of the Somali investors in the industry buy the restaurants from Kenyans in cash, money which could be “linked to huge ransoms” paid at sea to Somali pirates. “Why are they paying in cash? The reason is simple, it is much easier to hide the money trail when you are not transacting through the conventional banking system.

Concerned citizens urged the government to probe the massive Somali ‘buy out” of restaurants in Nairobi and other Kenyan towns as this could cause insecurity in the future, some of these people have been linked to terror networks

He said the state should probe claims of “money laundering” from high seas expressing concern of one “community” owning more than half of the restaurants in our major cities.

The government should also probe claims that some employees in the Somali owned outlets have fraudulently acquired Kenyan IDs, birth certificates and passports. “This may be a case for immigration and registration of persons to look into”.
