Sigalame Boys High School has gone through two fire incidents in two weeks and as if that is not all, during the same period school Principal Mr Patrick Auma was involved in a serious road accident that nearly cost him his life. The school is in Funyula constituency of Busia county.

The school started in 1965 as a day and boarding school with two streams. The boarding section was a product of the government while the day section was Harambee section. It was officially opened on the 14th March 1970 by Mr. Robinson Mcllvaine, the then American ambassador to the Republic of Kenya.

What exactly could be happening at the school no one knows but three separate major incidents involving the school have left the community around it baffled. The first fire incident at the school was attributed to an electric fault but what has raised many eyebrows is the second fire incident which has been faced with a lot of suspicions by the concerned parties, the community and police investigators.

In mid-July, the principal Patrick Auma was rushed to Agha Khan clinic in Busia town after suffering injuries from a road accident before being transferred to Bungoma Lifecare Hospital where he was treated and later discharged

A while back there were reports that education officials in Kenya had identified several reasons behind incidents of fire in schools and unrest, they include students panicking about expected stricter supervision in national exams, poor school leadership, the imposition of stricter rules and drug abuse. There was also the suggestion that some teachers may have been involved in the planning of the attacks and arson.

The accident happened in Matayos-Busia County

According to a statement that was released by the school principal at the time, he suspected outsiders of having razed down the dormitory, he never went at length to explain in detail what he knows or even what he had shared with investigators.

In mid-July, the principal was rushed to Agha Khan clinic in Busia town after suffering injuries from a road accident before being transferred to Bungoma Lifecare Hospital where he was treated and later discharged, the incident has never been fully explained.

When The Weekly Vision writer got into contact with some of the students who sought anonymity, they alleged that the fire started when they were still in class during the evening session, blaming the security department instead for their laxity. The students have since been sent home as investigations are underway to determine the root cause of the problem.
