The ODM party is faced with a brewing storm following a decision to grant some aspirants a walk-over during next month’s party nomination excises.

This has contradicted repeated assurances made by ODM party leader and Azimio la Umoja presidential aspirant Raila Odinga that free and fair primaries would be held throughout the country starting on April 1st .

Indeed the ODM party leader’s sister and former deputy governor of Kisumu county Ruth Odinga warned against “preferred candidates” by Orange house saying it could trigger voter apathy. This she warned could cost her brother Raila Odinga the presidency as he needs every vote he can get to defeat deputy president William Ruto of UDA.

In the last week alone, the party issued direct certificates in at least 10 electoral areas, including three gubernatorial positions and four parliamentary seats. Some of the ODM-elected women MPs include Mishi Mboko (Likoni), Millie Odhiambo (Suba North), Eve Obara (Kabondo Kasipul) and Lilian Gogo (Rangwe)

In Luo Nyanza where an ODM ticket has in the past amounted to being already “elected” a bitter fall-out is underway. Many political watchers in ODM strongholds in Nyanza, North East, Western and parts of Rift valley are warning of major fallout. They have accused the party headquarters of giving out direct nomination certificates to the “highest bidder” even as the party refunds millions in fees. Former Nairobi governor Evans Kidero has allegedly angrily left the party accusing it of “brazen dictatorship”. Kidero is said to be mulling over an independent candidature after the party gave Gladys Wanga the Homa Bay ticket.

There are claims Orange House will grant Nyatike MP Tom Mboya Odege direct nomination for Migori governor. Others eying the seat are incumbent Okoth Obado, former MP Edick Anyanga, and Senator Ochillo Ayacko. Some of the ODM-elected women MPs include Mishi Mboko (Likoni), Millie Odhiambo (Suba North), Eve Obara (Kabondo Kasipul) and Lilian Gogo (Rangwe).

As of Sunday, the party had given direct tickets to former Ketraco boss Fernandes Barasa (Kakamega), former Agriculture Principal Secretary Hamadi Boga (Kwale) and Nathif Jamah (Garissa). The party also issued tickets to Tindi Mwale (Butere), Titus Khamala (Lurambi), Peter Nabulindo (Matungu), Christopher Aseka (Khwisero) and Majority Whip Emmanuel Wangwe (Navakholo). Chungwa House sources told The Weekly Vision that the process will continue in the coming weeks and only a handful of MPs, Senate, MCA and governor races will be subjected to primaries.
