Mwai Kibaki’s body lies in state at parliament

The late Mwai Kibaki

During his term as president, the country saw the entrenchment of a powerful political outfit closely allied to his regime known as the Mt. Kenya Mafia which had replaced the late Moi’s Kalenjin Mafia and his predecessor Jomo Kenyatta’s Kiambu Mafia

Emilio Mwai Kibaki was the 3rd President of the Republic of Kenya after succeeding his predecessor President Daniel Arap Moi, both of whom worked as founding President the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta’s ministers for decades.

The country is mourning a man who achieved a lot before and during his tenure as President. Those achievements have been consistently splashed daily by the local media since his death but we must not forget that every coin has two sides.

That during his term as president, the country saw the entrenchment of a powerful political outfit closely allied to the late President known as the Mt. Kenya Mafia which had replaced the late Moi’s Kalenjin Mafia and his predecessor Jomo Kenyatta’s Kiambu Mafia.

Raila Odinga declared “Kibaki Tosha” on the understanding that he would serve for only one term. Kibaki reneged and battled it out for a second term whose contested results in the 2007 elections set the country spontaneously on fire that brought it to its knees in a never witnessed post-election violence incidents

Perhaps Kibaki’s Mafia was the last but the most powerful of the three, the Mafia did not only influence Kenya’s political direction and the civil service, but it also influenced all aspects of Kenyan’s daily lives.

The late Lucy Kibaki

Unlike his successor President Kenyatta Uhuru Kenyatta though plagued with administrative challenges right from a renegade Deputy President, he seems to have curtailed the powerful presidential mafia cartels. As the late President lies in State, we must not forget that he was the first president ever in Kenya’s history to be sworn into office in a wheelchair, because of the near-fatal car accident in Machakos county in 2002. Raila Odinga declared “Kibaki Tosha” on the understanding that he will serve for only one term. Kibaki reneged and battled it out for a second term whose contested results in the 2007 elections set the country spontaneously on fire that brought it to its knees in a never witnessed post-election violence incidents.

For the first time in Kenya’s history, a coalition government was formed under intense international pressure led by the late Kofi Annan who practically salvaged the country from collapse

In 2007 President Kibaki was declared the winner of that year’s presidential elections against Raila Odinga by the disbanded ECK. Kibaki became the first President to be sworn into office at the statehouse under still questionable hours, a departure from public daylight procedure like he was at Uhuru Park in 2002.

That contested declaration triggered the violence that saw more than 1,200 killed, tens of thousands wounded, hundreds of thousands displaced and some still living in IDP camps – especially in Deputy President William Ruto’s Rift Valley, the worst-hit area. For the first time in Kenya’s history, a coalition government was formed under intense international pressure led by the late Kofi Annan who practically salvaged the country from collapse.

The late President and first lady, Lucy Kibaki had already set the country on ‘vituko’ precedence that this country had and has never seen before.

There were the foreign mercenaries, the Arturs brother, the suspected deadly mercenaries who roamed free with powerful cars, armed complete with senior police officers Identity barges, and communications systems. They raided and destroyed KTN TV studios, there was also the historic raiding of the Nation Centre at night by first lady Lucy Kibaki in pyjamas, the drama was captured live on TV.
