The western region is presumed to be the preserve of ANC and Ford Kenya political parties whose leaders are charged with the huge burden of delivering at least 70 per cent of votes to Ruto, for them to benefit from the government should they win

A massive political tsunami has erupted within the top brass of Deputy President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza alliance that threatens to derail his quest for the country’s presidency. Emerging details indicate that an internal political war is playing out among political parties domiciled in Kenya Kwanza over the fielding of candidates on UDA in areas the party is perceived to be “foreign”

The battle pits Deputy President William Ruto’s UDA party against Amani National Congress (ANC) party and its leader Musalia Mudavadi, Ford-Kenya’s leader Moses Wetangula and Maendeleo Chap Chap Leader Alfred Mutua among others. Ruto’s UDA Party has insisted on fielding candidates in areas perceived to be the “home ground” of its partner political parties in Kenya Kwanza, raising disquiet among coalition members. UDA has cleared a candidate to contest for the Sabatia constituency seat in Vihiga County which is a clear affront to the ANC leader, according to his supporters.

The worst-hit area is the western region, an area perceived to be Mr Mudavadi and Mr Wetangula’s backyard. At stake is the fielding of candidates for the Senate, National Assembly, Gubernatorial and Members of the County Assemblies (MCAs) seats in the August 9th, 2022 general elections, UDA party has a candidate in Musalia Mudavadi’s County Ward.

The situation is so bad to the extent that a video has been circulating online over the same; the video went viral on social media outlets showing Mr Mudavadi pleading with voters from his home county of Vihiga to support their quest and not UDA’s. He told his listeners that DP Ruto was manipulating them politically to cut them down to size in their political stronghold

The western region is presumed to be the preserve of ANC and Ford Kenya political parties whose leaders are charged with the huge burden of delivering at least 70 per cent of votes to Ruto, for them to benefit from the government should they win. Sources within Kenya Kwanza told The Weekly Vision that Mr Mudavadi and Senator Wetang’ula are hurt by UDA’s manipulative moves aimed at making inroads in Western Kenya. Musalia Mudavadi is on record pleading with residents not to elect candidates contesting on DP’s Ruto UDA party.

DP Ruto is manipulating us politically to cut us down to size in our own political stronghold of Western Kenya

The situation is so bad to the extent that a video has been circulating online over the same; the video went viral on social media outlets showing Mudavadi pleading with voters from his home county of Vihiga to support their quest and not UDA’s. He told his listeners that DP Ruto was manipulating them politically to cut them down to size in their political stronghold. Mr Mudavadi now wants his backyard to support leaders vying on his party ticket and not those seeking the seats under UDA. He asked residents not to embarrass him by voting in UDA candidates as the area is perceived as his political bastion.

UDA has fielded Mr Clement Siloya for the parliamentary seat in Sabatia, Vihiga County, the home turf of Mr Mudavadi. The ANC party leader argued that because they had given UDA the two top positions of President and Deputy, Ruto should not interfere in their areas

In his pleas, Mudavadi said: “If you look keenly, do you think Sugoi residents can elect an ANC party MP in their backyard despite some of us being in one coalition? Let’s be honest and say the truth much as we are going to form a government together, Ruto’s home MP will be from UDA. Don’t embarrass me in this forthcoming general election; just give me an ANC MP in my backyard.”

UDA has fielded Mr Clement Siloya for the parliamentary seat in Sabatia, Vihiga County, the home turf of Mr Mudavadi. The ANC party leader argued that because they had given UDA the two top positions of President and Deputy, Ruto should not interfere in their areas. He lamented that DP Ruto fielding candidates in Vihiga County are tantamount to denying him the chance to have an ANC legislator on his home turf. “Let us, therefore, respect each other and observe boundaries because these numbers are very crucial in the coming days. We shall not get the 70 per cent margin if we do not have our governors, senators, MPs and MCAs,” he declared, urging UDA to consider withdrawing Mr Siloya from the race. Mr Siloya is seeking to replace Mr Alfred Agoi, a close ally of Mudavadi who succeeded him as area MP after Moses Akaranga was chucked out as MP in 2013. UDA chairman Johnson Muthama has since said that the agreement within Kenya Kwanza is based on supporting DP. Ruto’s State House bid and not supporting each other party aspirants.

He was widely quoted saying: “Our coalition is based on supporting the presidential candidate, not on supporting each other’s candidates. Those claiming that they are being discriminated against are mistaken.” Mr Muthama said the parties are free to hold rallies and even use DP Ruto’s photo on their posters and their leaders should be campaigning for them because UDA will continue supporting its own contenders, effectively meaning that the concerns of their affiliates parties in Kenya Kwanza are moot, automatically opening the ground for some ugly competition ahead of the August 9th, 2022 elections.
