Rift Valley communities panic as Kalenjin elders ‘convene succession’ rally in Eldoret

Governor Jackson Mandago and MP Oscar Sudi

The meeting in Eldoret tomorrow enjoys the support of the DP and speakers are expected to raise concerns over the “reneging” of a pre-election deal. The deal was that the two communities, Kikuyu and the Kalenjin to which Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto belong, agreed to share power and back each other for at least 20 years!

Angry Kalenjin leaders who are not amused at the way President Uhuru Kenyatta’s 2022 succession race, are set to hold a key meeting in Eldoret tomorrow. The rally will be addressed by deputy president William Ruto. The meeting bringing together Kalenjin professionals, elders, religious leaders, governors and MPs is expected to chart the way forward for the community.

A Source divulged to The Weekly Vision Online that there is growing anxiety over the clear deliberate refusal by President Kenyatta to endorse his deputy William Ruto as a presidential candidate in the August poll. The source claimed Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago is spearheading talks with Kikuyu elders in Rift Valley on the matter.

President Kenyatta has since transferred most of the DP’s official duties to the new kids on the block like CS Fred Matiangi, even bringing in the army to take control of key parastatals like the Kenya Meat Commission and the KCC

The meeting enjoys the support of the DP and speakers are expected to raise concerns over the “reneging” of a pre-election deal in 2012-2013. According to that deal, the two communities, Kikuyu and the Kalenjin to which Uhuru and Ruto belong agreed to share power and back each other. Instead, President Kenyatta who has only seven months in power is pushing for ODM leader Raila Odinga to succeed him. Since the March 9th 2018 political truce with Odinga, Kenyatta has completely elbowed out his deputy from all official functions.

Mr Ruto whose critical block of voters in the north and south rift gave president Uhuru Kenyatta victory in a hotly contested election is today holding an empty shell of an office! Kenyatta has since transferred most of the DP’s official duties to the new kids on the block like CS Fred Matiangi, even bringing in the army to take control of key parastatals like the Kenya Meat Commission and the KCC.

This has been at the expense of Mr Ruto’s key allies who have been hounded out of government as the president declares he will not hand over power to “thieves”! Now there are growing fears in the vast vote-rich Rift Valley of the opening of old wounds as Kenyatta is accused of failing to properly manage his succession. Others say that the ground both in Central Kenya and the Rift is largely swaying to the Ruto wing despite overwhelming pressure by President Kenyatta. Detractors of Ruto who back Mr Odinga insist that “Hakuna deni” there is no debt since the DP has served in government for 10 years.

In any case, they argue power can’t be revolving around two tribes only when Kenya has 49 ethnic communities. Only the Kikuyu-Kalenjin have ruled East Africa’s largest economy in 60 years of independence.
