Raila Odinga’s show of might as the battle for State House 2022 heats up

The Orange Democratic Movement party (ODM) leader Raila Odinga flexed the might of his political muscle last Friday when he officially declared his candidature for the Presidency in next year’s general elections. The declaration was beamed live on TV by virtually all major television stations in the country, the event could easily be the biggest step Raila’s has made so far on his journey to State House.

No other presidential candidate has been able to flex that kind of political muscle. Themed Azimio la Umoja, the function set very high standards in teams of attendance, press and security coverage, organizational skills and execution. This development puts Raila’s main challengers in the race, deputy president William Ruto and the (OKA) team particularly Musalia Mudavadi leader of the Amani National Congress (ANC) party, Kalonzo Musyoka the Wiper leader and Kanu’s Gideon Moi to a major test. Both Mudavadi and Musyoka are former Vice Presidents who have previously contested for the presidency.

The four OKA principals

Just a few days earlier, wealthy business moguls from the former Central Province or Mt. Kenya region had officially declared Raila Odinga as their candidate of choice in next year’s general elections

What came out clearly during Raila’s big day at Kasarani Sports Complex is that he has so far done his job well. People from all regions across the country spoke out their minds, tabling the unique challenges they faced before Raila’s big day at Kasarani last Friday. Raila had visited all parts of the Mt. Kenya region whose leaders like the seasoned professional lawyer and immediate former Nyeri County Women Rep Priscilla Nyokabi were the backbone in organizing Raila’s Azmio la Umoja Kasarani event, a highly telling point in its own right. Other areas visited are the former Coast Province, Western, Nyanza, North and South Rift Valley, Nairobi, Eastern, North Eastern provinces.

DP William Ruto

It is a constitutional requirement that leaders have failed to engage in while in office as heads of state, instead of having their administrations making choices and decisions for the populace without involving them, especially on identifying and executing community development projects, social, economic or otherwise. This brings into question DP Ruto’s much-publicized and peddled wheelbarrow bottoms’ up economic dialogue. How many Kenyans were consulted and identified wheelbarrows as solutions to the endless debilitating social, economic and financial woes faced by the youths in Kenya?

Just a few days earlier, wealthy business moguls from the former Central Province or Mt. Kenya region had officially declared Raila Odinga as their candidate of choice in next year’s general elections. Central Kenya or the Mt. Kenya region holds the largest number of registered voters in the country at more than 8 million, followed by the Luhyia communities of the former Western Province with more than 6 million, Raila’s Nyanza with more than 4 million, the Rift Valley with diverse communities with more than 5 million voters, the Coast region with more than 3 million. Whoever will swing a majority of these votes in their favour will be the country’s next president.

ANC party leader Musalia Mudavadi

Raila Odinga’s influence in Western Kenya among the Luhya Community cannot be under-estimated as already shown by the number of governors, Senators, Members of Parliament and Members of the County Assemblies (MCAs) currently in the office on that party’s tickets compared to Mudavadi’s ANC and Ford Kenya whom some consider ‘dominant’ in the region. Talk is rife of OKA’s Gideon Moi and Musyoka are quietly working together with Raila Odinga.

Though invited to the event at Kasarani only Gideon attended, Musyoka was reportedly on official duty in Southern Sudan; Musalia Mudavadi was waiting for his late mother’s body to arrive from the United States while Moses Wetangula was AWOL.
