Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga will unveil his Azmio La Umoja bid for the 2022 presidency this week at the 60-thousand-seater Kasarani stadium. Mr Odinga has contested for the presidency four times in the past and this time round he seems to enjoy the support from outgoing president Uhuru Kenyatta.

Sources have intimated to The Weekly Vision Online that President Uhuru Kenyatta and one or two co-principals of the One Kenya Alliance (OKA) may attend the event. Mr Odinga’s fresh bid to “re-invent” himself seems to have been fashioned on the lines of former Tanzanian president Mwalimu Julius Nyerere’s 1965 “Azmio La Arusha” declaration.

The DP seems to have taken the chance of having been elbowed out of government by his boss President Kenyatta to engage in early campaigns, he has been on the campaign trail since 2018

Mr Odinga has in the past even used some popular praises attributed to Tanzania’s charismatic founding president whose simplicity and modesty won worldwide praise. Mwalimu Nyerere declared in 1985 that his “Azmio La Arusha” which he had launched in 1965 had unified the people of mainland Tanganyika and the Island of Zanzibar when he introduced “Ujamma” Mwalimu Nyerere stepped down after ruling East Africa’s largest and most populous country for 25 years. He passed the mantle to Zanzibari born Ali Hassan Mwinyi and retired to his simple fishing village house in Butiama near Mwanza on the shores of Lake Victoria.

Mr Odinga will be battling a much younger and more energetic competitor in deputy president William Ruto for the presidency. Mr Ruto seems to have taken the chance of having been elbowed out of government by his boss President Kenyatta to engage in early campaigns, he has been on the campaign trail since 2018. The DP has a well-oiled national campaign machine, using point-men to infiltrate every nook and cranny spread across the country.

As Mr Odinga and his squad converges at a re-branded Kasarani stadium, DP Ruto’s brigade has camped in the Mount Kenya region to “undo” Raila’s recent campaign gains in Nyeri. When he was in Nyeri, Mr Odinga greeted a huge crowd by saying that he brought greetings from retired President Mwai Kibaki who was “unwell”. But Ruto men rubbished the claim.

DP Ruto has derided the ruling Jubilee party as “doomed” and collapsing like a pack of cards! He says that ten governors from central Kenya had quit and were about to join him in the UDA party! The DP has been marketing his UDA outfit from the secure comfort of his office as second in command!
