The Azimio la Umoja Alliance Presidential flag-bearer Raila Odinga stormed into the vote-rich western Kenya last weekend and told his opponent, rebel Deputy President William Ruto to be ready for a bruising battle at the coming Presidential polls.
The former Prime Minister made the declaration during a major campaign rally at Bukhungu stadium in Kakamega town, the region’s headquarters. His supporters attended the rally in droves; they were drawn from all the five counties in the region, Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia, Trans Nzoia and Vihiga Counties.
The region is home to William Ruto’s allies in Kenya Kwanza, Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader Musalia Mudavadi (Vihiga) and Ford-Kenya leader Moses Wetangula (Bungoma). The two men have since been relegated to mere spectators in the outfit yet they were tasked with delivering at least 70 per cent of the region’s vote to William Ruto.
The rally was graced by Congolese veteran female singer Mbilia Bel. Mr Odinga was accompanied by his running mate Martha Karua, Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Defense Cabinet Secretary and DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa, outgoing Mombasa County Governor Hassan Joho and several legislators.
Mr Odinga said he and his brigade have been to many parts of the country – “and all indications are that I will win the presidency with ease on August 9th, 2022.” He continued: “There are 30 days left to the August 9 General Election. Let our competitors know that I have a formidable team. They should be prepared to face the disappointment of losing the elections hands down as we prepare to take office.”
Mr Odinga said his government would focus on fighting corruption that has been be-devilling and continues to plague the country with adverse consequences to the people of Kenya and its tattered economy. “I urge Western Kenya not to make the mistake of voting for Kenya Kwanza. That side has nothing to offer. I promise Kenyans the third and final liberation. Our focus is improving the country’s economy all round not running it to the ground like the others,” Mr Odinga said. He declared: “We want to fight ignorance, disease, hunger and corruption. We will not relent in the fight against corruption and making Kenya a great country.”
Defense C.S Wamalwa told the crowd that the rebel Deputy President Ruto nearly slapped him when he led a delegation of leaders from Western Kenya to meet President Uhuru Kenyatta at Nairobi State House in 2018. Mr Wamalwa narrated how Dr Ruto erupted into an angry temper because he had not been informed about the visit before it was executed
Ms Karua said Kenya Kwanza leaders should not complain when the Azimio side tells citizens the truth about them since it is all there for everybody to see, do not be fooled by empty rhetoric.
The Azimio Presidential Running Mate warned Kenyans: “We are in danger of finding ourselves in a pit if we do not vote carefully and ensure the country has respected leaders. Azimio is offering Kenyans, mature leaders who have the experience to run the country and take it to the next level.”
She went on to stress that the Azimio leadership stands for peaceful campaigns and respect for all, “unlike our Kenya Kwanza competitors. I, therefore, ask our youth and women to vote for Raila Odinga because he will take care of their interests. He will liberate our nation from corrupt oppressors and exploiters, above all restore integrity and prosperity to our nation and people.”
Defense C.S Wamalwa told the crowd that the rebel Deputy President Ruto nearly slapped him when he led a delegation of leaders from Western Kenya to meet President Uhuru Kenyatta at Nairobi State House in 2018. Mr Wamalwa narrated how Dr Ruto erupted into an angry temper because he had not been informed about the visit before it was executed. “The DP was very furious and demanded my resignation. He wanted me to explain why I had taken the leaders to meet President Uhuru Kenyatta without his permission,” said the Defense CS.
He went on to add that Dr Ruto confronted Interior CS Fred Matiang’i when President Kenyatta gave the latter additional government responsibilities. The Wiper leader Musyoka said the election would open a new chapter in the country by ushering in the Azimio leadership declaring: “We have campaigned in Coast, Eastern, Central, Nairobi, Nyanza, Western and other parts of the country. Kenyans are ready to vote for Baba as their fifth resident.” He urged Western Kenya not to follow Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi and Ford Kenya’s Moses Wetang’ula.
