Many people in Kenya regard businessman Jimmy Wanjigi as a daydreamer, for dreaming of unseating Mr Raila Odinga as the ODM presidential flagbearer. Mr Wanjigi has been on the campaign trail trying what many say is a doomed quest.

The wealthy businessman regarded as a major ODM party financier was once accused by president Kenyatta of “betraying” his people, President Kenyatta’s government even sent a contingent of flying squad detectives to search Wanjigi’s houses allegedly for hidden guns.  The police found no guns and Mr Wanjigi in return accused the president of a witch-hunt. That was before the 2018 handshake between Raila Odinga and President Kenyatta. With Uhuru and Raila’s political bromance, Mr Wanjigi now sticks out like a sore thumb, yet he appears to be the only presidential challenger to Mr Odinga in ODM.

Kenya faces a major external debt burden worsened by the Covid 19 global pandemic and at least 2 million Kenyans lost their jobs and many have been living from hand to mouth since March 2020

Many remember the men in black suits who disrupted an alleged ODM AGM by anti-Odinga rebels at Kasarani. The party election was aborted leading to defections, notable of which was ODM secretary general Ababu Namwamba who defected to Jubilee and is now a senior government official.  While on a whistle-stop campaign in Migori, Raila’s home-turf, a rowdy crowd chased Mr Wanjigi away, hurling rocks at his car forcing him to speed off.  But the man has refused to back off and has now rubbished Odinga’s promise of “free” monthly Ksh. 6,000 to unemployed Kenyans as a “pipe dream. “Mr Wanjigi says the former prime minister should stop “blatant falsehoods” that are not sustainable.

Kenya, he said faces a major external debt burden worsened by the Covid 19 global pandemic.  At least 2 million Kenyans lost their jobs and many have been living from hand to mouth since March 2020. Mr Odinga claims he has a “pot of gold” to be opened once he is elected president in 2022! This is a big joke, says Wanjigi. Others who had ambitions of challenging Mr Odinga for the ODM Presidential ticket like Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya and Mombasa Governor Joho have since backed off.
