Deputy President William Ruto faces growing pressure to quit government following his coronation by UDA party delegates as their presidential flag-bearer in the August 9th elections. The ruling party Jubilee through Vice-chairman David Murathe, demanded that the DP should resign immediately and concentrate on his presidential campaigns.

The Azimio la Umoja leaders told the DP off for being a “cry baby” while undermining the government from within instead of resigning. But a defiant Ruto ruled out any suggestions for him to resign, claiming he was elected by more than 8 million Kenyans alongside President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2017.

Currently, the DP is probably the only serving African number two who is a member of two political parties, virtually eating his cake and having it which according to David Murathe is unacceptable!

In most African governments Ruto would either have resigned or been given the boot, but Kenya’s number two enjoys protection from the 2010 constitution that allows the president and his deputy to be elected as a pair. A furious David Murathe blames this “lacuna” in law for allowing a “rogue” DP to continue enjoying perks from the government that he keeps fighting including attacking it from foreign capitals. In its most important public function to date, deliberations on the coronation of UDA’s presidential candidate, the party decided to eject the media from the venue.

Azimio la Umoja’s Prof. Makau Mutua said; “In effect, Dr Ruto decided to deny the Kenyan public and even members of UDA party the opportunity to witness the function live, why they took the decision remains unknown. The opacity and secrecy of UDA is a chilling reminder to Kenyans what Dr Ruto would do if he captures state power.”

Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi said since Dr Ruto had accepted the nomination for the presidency on the UDA ticket; he should resign immediately as Deputy President because he is no longer a member of the Jubilee party on whose ticket he was elected. “Anything short of that simply confirms how unprincipled and opportunistic he is,” he added.
