The person I will hand power to and you all know him and you have been mentioning his name, will inherit 13 trillion economy from me yet I inherited a 5 trillion economy from Kibaki- Uhuru Kenyatta
President Uhuru Kenyatta deeply waded into the August 9th Presidential race yesterday as he pitched camps at Sagana State Lodge in Nyeri County. He made his first-ever direct support for the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as his preferred heir.
“The person I will hand power to and you all know him and you have been mentioning his name, will inherit 13 trillion economy from me yet I inherited a 5 trillion economy from Kibaki. Then someone out there says I have done nothing. I cannot risk handing over to someone who will not take care of this economy and I am saying it here without fear. I will hand over to that person, the one that you all know,” Kenyatta said
Some say it is “too little too late”, while others argue the declaration is likely to help Mr Odinga’s fledgling fortunes in the Mount Kenya region. President Uhuru Kenyatta fell out with his deputy of nine years; William Ruto whom many people assumed would have been his automatic successor. The president has systematically elbowed his DP out of government, handing most of his state functions to CS Fred Mataingi.

President Kenyatta reconciled with his once bitter foe Raila Odinga on March 9th 2018. He and the ODM leader, also the Azmio la Umoja Presidential aspirant shook hands on the steps of Harambee House, ending a bitter election period. Their cosy political ties between the president and Raila Odinga came at the expense of Mr Ruto.
A sidelined Ruto has since won over the support of ANC party leader Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula of FORD Kenya formerly of NASA allies of Odinga in 2017. Kenyatta’s Sagana retreat has been rubbished by Kenya Kwanza who insist Ruto’s iron hold in Mount Kenya is unassailable. Opinion pollsters have put the DP leading in the region but with a fast-improving Odinga on his neck.
Mr Odinga’s strategists expect a tectonic shift in the vote-rich Central Kenya in his favour once President Kenyatta openly declares Mr Odinga as his successor. A rebellion of sorts has been boiling in the region, with many unemployed youths resorting to drowning in illicit brews even in Gatundu where the president comes from.
Tea, Diary and coffee farmers accuse President Kenyatta of killing their economic lifeline. Others have not forgotten that the president once referred to central Kenya MPs allied to Ruto as “wachenzi nyinyi” (foolish people). The slur went viral on social media drawing angry reactions from the public.
