‘’ The picking of Martha Karua demonstrates who among those who want to lead this country wants to end the cycle of the shortage of gender rule. This is a woman who has stood to not only defend women but the rights of all Kenyans, she deserves it’’,- Mrs Nangabo
Former nominated Senator and Maendeleo ya Wanawake national chairperson Dr Zipporahh Kittony lauded the appointment of Karua and asked women of Kenya to refuse to be drawn into politics of ethnicity, hatred, division
Huge celebrations erupted in Kitale town when Martha Karua was picked as Raila Odinga’s running mate in the coming elections. The celebrations were led by County Women representative Janet Nangabo who said the picking of Karua as Odinga’s running is a clear indication of the Azimio leader’s determination to have women included in Kenya’s devolved political system.
She lauded Karua for being part of the team that crafted the 2010 constitutional reforms agenda which changed the entire political system and designed a minimum threshold of Kenyan women in government. ‘’ The picking of Martha Karua demonstrates who among those who want to lead this country wants to end the cycle of the shortage of gender rule. This is a woman who has stood to not only defend women but the rights of all Kenyans, she deserves it’’, said Mrs Nangabo.
She added that Karua has been at the forefront of fighting for the two-thirds gender rule and should be supported by all women of this country. She said while the 2017 elections yielded the nation’s highest proportion of women in parliament, she included, that political formations have exhibited a lack of commitment to adhere to the two-third gender rule leaving them noncompliant with the constitution. She described Karua as an alternative to the many men who had yearned to deputize ODM leader Raila Odinga, saying her choice will help improve women’s inclusion in government after the 9th August elections.
She said: Kenyans must now change their mindset on culturally thinking the work of women is to excite them in their closets, cooking for them and doing all donkey work simply because they are women. The choice of Martha as running mate to Azimio leader, she said marks the removal of persistent obstacles to women’s inclusion in politics and increasing gender political power in the full implementation of the constitution.
She said for the first time in Kenya, a presidential aspirant had fulfilled a promise of recognizing a woman among all packs of men contestants for the office of the second in command in the whole republic. Former nominated Senator and Maendeleo ya Wanawake national chairperson Dr Zipporahh Kittony lauded the appointment of Karua and asked women of Kenya to refuse to be drawn into politics of ethnicity, hatred, division and political deceit and stand firmly behind one of their own to chart the way forward for their inclusion in management of the country and other devolved units.
“I want to thank the Right Honourable Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for picking Martha as his running mate. It is time for all Kenyan women to firmly stand behind her to steer this country to greater heights of prosperity’’, she said. She said the inclusion of Ms Karua will usher in a new transformative agenda, and do necessary constitutional amendments that will fully have the two-third gender rule operationalised. “The two-third gender rule will finally be in operation for the benefit of all including men in case women get elected everywhere leaving them behind, Kenya will be more united through the achievement of the rule’’, she said.
Trans Nzoia County, the Maendeleo ya wanawake chapter leader Jane Wekesa also lauded ODM leader Raila Odinga for picking Ms Karua as his running mate, saying she will help in accelerating the wheels of development.
She spoke at the Maendeleo ya wanawake office in Kitale shortly after the Azimio la Umoja Presidential aspirant Raila Odinga picked Karua as his running mate and minister for justice and constitutional affairs. ‘’ The Women leaders in this county wish to celebrate the honourable Martha Karua upon her appointment as running mate to Baba the Fifth. Martha has helped build her career with bravery, sacrifice and fidelity’’, said Mrs Wekesa, wife to the chairman of the committee appointed by the ODM leader to choose his running mate.
ODM Women aspirant for Trans Nzoia Naomi Kemunto Wanjara lauded Karua’s pick as a testament to the long-awaited women’s admiration for ascending to the highest office in the land. Mrs Okul said ” Martha has proved that everything is possible by becoming the first Kenyan woman to be nominated as a running mate paving way for her ascending to the office of the first female President after Baba the fifth.
