The race to succeed Governor Wycliffe Oparanya in Kakamega County has gained pace. The two main candidates are linked to two giant political formations, Azimio/ODM of Raila Odinga and United Democratic Alliance/Kenya Kwanza of Deputy President William Ruto.

ODM party has billionaire Fernandes Baraza having secured a direct nomination certificate running against ANC’s Cleophas Malala whose party leader is Musalia Mudavadi of Kenya Kwanza political formation.  The contest between Mr Baraza and Malala in Kakamega will also gauge the influence of two sons from the county who will not appear on the ballot paper. They are outgoing Governor Oparanya who is also a former Council of Governors’ chair and Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli.

Fernandes Baraza and Ayub Savula

The two will want to show who is boss between them and ANC party leader Musalia Mudavadi who claims that he controls the political destiny of the Luhya community in the sprawling Kakamega, the neighbouring Vihiga, Busia, Trans Nzoia and Bungoma Counties.

Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa’s DAP-K Party an affiliate within the Azimio outfit had nominated Lugari legislator Ayub Savula to contest as governor but he decided to join Mr Fernandes Barasa as his running mate, the move by Mr Savula is most likely to see him become the first former journalist from the region to become DG after the August 9th polls.

The other vocal politician from the county Dr Bonny Khalwale is trying to re-capture his Senatorial seat in the forthcoming elections on a UDA ticket. Dr Khalwale contested for the Senate seat during the last general elections but lost to Malala. A week ago, Mr Malala unveiled Beatrice Inyangala as his running mate at Lion’s Grounds in Kakamega town, the event was graced by the Kenya Kwanza aspirants including Boni Khalwale (Senate), Malava MP Malulu Injendi and Mumias East MP Benjamin Washiali – all of them are known DP Ruto’s supporters.

Kakamega County Senator Malala with Beatrice Inyangala

Beatrice Inyangala makes history as the first woman to be nominated running mate in luhyaland. The outgoing Kakamega County Senator Malala said he chose to have a woman deputy to address major issues that concern women. Malala was quoted by a section of the media as saying “I wanted to find the best way to help the women of Kakamega, someone who understands what women go through, that’s why I decided to bring on board Beatrice Inyangala who understands adequately issues that affect women and can provide solutions in this great county.”

Senator Mala went on to publicly declare: He said his administration will go beyond the constitutional two-thirds gender rule and instead provide 50-50 opportunities to the male and female gender. Four days after the declaration by Malala, Ayub Savula joined former Ketraco CEO Barasa as part of a plan to lock out Deputy President William Ruto from Kakamega County. He declared that: “With my understanding of the psychology and terrain of Kakamega, we can rest assured of a decisive victory.” He however failed to mention the powerful forces of Atwoli and Oparanya in the emerging political dispensation. Another aspirant who is eyeing the same seat is Nairobi businessman Sam Omukoko on Maendeleo Democratic Party ticket.
