The One Kenya Alliance (OKA) political outfit may lately have spoken in categorical terms about Kenya’s inflation battered economy, but more importantly, the group seems to have failed to agree on whom among them will be their presidential flag bearer, they claim the announcement will be made early next year!

But Musalia Mudavadi’s camp has given a December 26 deadline or no deal! The former prime minister and ODM supremo Raila Odinga is crossing their fingers as OKA flip flops in a sea of indecision and so is deputy president William Ruto of UDA whose strategists see an easier battle if OKA principals fail to unite.

But Mudavadi and Kalonzo Musyoka (WIPER) still claim they will agree on one candidate for the 2022 epic duel. With Mudavadi already assembling a fleet of branded campaign vehicles ready for 2022, many say the die is already cast! It’s clear, commentators are pointing out, that both men who have been vice presidents and held key dockets in the cabinet for years are unwilling to cede ground.

Insiders say Mudavadi is likely to bolt out of the OKA stable by Christmas, while flip-flopping Kalonzo Musyoka could opt for an alliance with DP Ruto

Only KANU’s Gideon Moi and FORD Kenya’s Moses Wetangula appear ready for a one candidate deal. Mudavadi has dismissed Raila’s free Kshs. 6000 cash to unemployed Kenyans as “untenable” and a “flat lie”! Gideon is vowing to slash taxes by 50 per cent if OKA wins the 2022 election!

Insiders say Mudavadi is likely to bolt out of the OKA stable by Christmas, while flip-flopping Kalonzo Musyoka could opt for an alliance with DP Ruto. President Uhuru Kenyatta has been fine-tuning a grand alliance with ODM, an announcement to that effect is expected to be made at the ruling party Jubilee ADC this month. But the planned “grand alliance” like the one that brought Mwai Kibaki to power in 2002 is premised on that OKA agrees to back Mr Odinga.

President Uhuru Kenyatta who steps down in August 2022 is also optimistic that the BBI last hurdle at the Supreme Court could bring good tidings! But even if this happens, there would be no time for a national referendum. The date for Kenya’s election is anchored in the constitution which spells out that it is the second week of August, 5 years after the last election. Defiant judges have twice outlawed the BBI heavily derailing President Kenyatta’s planned power-sharing deal with Mr Odinga and OKA co-principals.

The move could have locked DP Ruto out in the post-2022 Uhuru succession, making it easier for the president to pass the mantle to Mr Odinga. The President has since 2018 been locked in a vicious cold war with his deputy, systematically elbowing out of government by handing official government duties to interior cabinet secretary Fred Mataingi. Mr Matiangi chairs the inter-ministerial project implementation national committee. This virtually made DP Ruto the “most idle” deputy president in Kenya’s history! But Ruto has used his “free” time well consolidating a well-oiled campaign for power in 2022. While earning free salary and allowances as the countries second in command!
