The western region with 6 million registered voters, two-thirds of whom are first-time voters, presents a mouth-watering offer for any August 2022 presidential aspirant. In both 2013-2017 elections, Raila Odinga took a Lion’s share of the votes

One Kenya Alliance (OKA) coalition co-principals have true to wide predictions have only been playing hard to get while dangling feelers that they would “sell” their coalition to the highest bidder! According to impeccable sources, OKA is inching closer to signing a coalition deal with deputy president William Ruto, and talks are well oiled with huge cash offers. The source says that DP Ruto’s surprise visit to Mumias Sports Complex on the eve of the New Year was no accident. He was countering Raila Odinga who was next door in Bukhungu stadium Kakamega.

The DP was hosted by outspoken Kakamega senator Cleophas Malala who had organised a local football tournament. Ruto is keen to clip the wings of Mr Odinga and deny him the critical western Kenya block of swing votes. The region has never voted in one basket since the 1992 multi-party elections.

The source said that the DP’s top strategists were alarmed at Mr Odinga’s successful forays in the Mount Kenya region as 2021 drew to a close with opinion pollsters showing he had overtaken Mr Ruto as the most favourite presidential candidate in the region.

Some Luhya leaders now insist they have backed Mr Odinga enough times and it’s time for him to reciprocate by supporting ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi who has fought off all attempts to “coerce” him into backing Odinga once more

The western region with 6 million registered voters, two-thirds of whom are first-time voters, presents a mouth-watering offer for any August 2022 presidential aspirant. In both 2013-2017 elections, Raila Odinga took a Lion’s share of the votes harvesting a massive tally against the Uhuru-Ruto’S Jubilee juggernaut.

But some Luhya leaders now insist they have backed Mr Odinga enough times and it’s time for him to reciprocate by supporting ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi who has fought off all attempts to “coerce” him into backing Odinga once more. At one time Mudavadi pleaded with President Uhuru Kenyatta to stop the “night calls” from the Statehouse!

Mudavadi claimed Kenyatta had thrice hosted OKA co-principals at the statehouse and urged them to back Mr Odinga’s presidential bid. Other OKA men are Ford Kenya’s Moses Wetangula, Wiper leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka and KANU’s Gideon Moi who is already on Mr Odinga’s Azmiola Umoja bandwagon. With elections barely seven months away and OKA having failed to agree on a presidential aspirant, they are running out of options.

Time is of the essence and there is little doubt Ruto and his UDA party will leave nothing to chance in trying to win over western, Mr Odinga’s stronghold in the past two hotly contested elections.
