ODM In Major Test As It Postpones Primaries In 23 Counties

The new catchphrase in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party is “consensus” which according to party insiders is the only way of avoiding divisive party primaries.

However, most party faithful’s in Nyanza, Western and at the Coast have rejected the “consensus” mantra and direct nominations saying it is nothing but “dictatorship” through the backdoor.

They accused the ODM party secretariat of laying ground to reward the “highest bidders” in the party primaries slated to take place this month. The party postponed primaries in twenty-three counties raising fears of “preferred candidates” getting the nod after money changes hands!

Madam Catherine Muma, the Chairperson of the National Elections Board (NEB) recently told the media that ODM was keen to avoid past divisive and chaotic party nominations. She claimed holding party primaries in some areas was prone to abuse and manipulation arguing that consensus and direct nomination were the way to go.

Gladys Wanga has been given direct nomination for Homa Bay governor while Ferdinard Barasa got the Kakamega ticket. But Mumo seemed to contradict herself when she claimed nobody had been given a direct nomination! She conceded negotiations were ongoing among aspirants.
