Chairman of the National Council of Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs) Mr Stephen Cheboi is calling for speedy overhaul and revamping of the IEBC before the 2022 elections warning that delays could spell disaster for the country.

Speaking during a Virtual Zoom conference on good governance sensitization across 47 counties, Cheboi praised the prevailing political harmony but warned that it was “too good to last” if institutions running the elections are not empowered to discharge their duties “without fear or favour.”

Cheboi said a credible, free and fair election would be impossible under a “malfunctioning poll arbiter” like the current Wafula Chebukai-led commission

Cheboi said a credible, free and fair election would be impossible under a “malfunctioning poll arbiter” like the current Wafula Chebukai-led commission. Time ‘to get things right” before the all-important poll is running out, and recent poll violence during by-elections serves as a litmus test to the 2022 duel. The issue of revamping IEBC, he stressed, can’t wait for the BBI “train that has stalled midway”. The battery of lawyers now embroiled in a legal battle on the BBI motion trashed by 5 judges, Cheboi said was expending critical time and resources that could have been spent on critical governance issues.

He said since 2013 Kenya presidential elections have always been hotly contested and petitioned at the supreme court with acrimonious consequences in political violence costing lives and destruction of property.  In 2017 a landmark ruling by the supreme court presided over by then chief justice David Maraga overturned the victory of President Uhuru Kenyatta setting a precedent on the African continent. The situation almost degenerated into total chaos with the opposition boycotting the re-run, and then defiantly swearing in of Raila Odinga as “Peoples President” Janaury 31 2018 as Kenya tethered on the precipice of total collapse.

“Since then, not much has changed as the IEBC remains in place and what happens when a similar situation recurs when it could have been avoided” Cheboi further warned saying this must happen soon not later.
