NGO boss urges Kenyans to respect court verdict on BBI

By Jackson Kairu

The chairman of the national council of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) Mr Stephen Cheboi has urged Kenyans to stop fanning unnecessary tension following the decision by 5 high court judges to halt the BBI push to amend the 2010 constitution that created the devolved government system.

Cheboi said as a country that respects the rule of law, Kenya was alive to the civil liberties of wananchi and that while it is healthy to debate the pros and cons of the fate of BBI going forward, national cohesion and stability should be paramount.

Cheboi said as a country that respects the rule of law, Kenya was alive to the civil liberties of wananchi and that while it is healthy to debate the pros and cons of the fate of BBI going forward, national cohesion and stability should be paramount.

Cheboi said the litigants in the BBI motion should be allowed their constitutional right to exhaust all available avenues in the courts before a decision is arrived at on whether Kenyans will hold a national referendum before the August 2022 general elections for the country’s 5th transition president.

Cheboi told off hardliners across the political divide who have been attacking the judges for doing their work which is enshrined in the constitution saying the ‘learned friends” are custodians of the nation’s well-being and had operated within the law to stop an “illegality”. He said the state should protect the judges and respect the rule of law adding that the judges had not completely rejected the constitutional amendments. What the judges faulted, he explained, was the way the process was started and was being conducted evidently hinged on the egos and political ambitions of “2 individuals” who wrongly assumed to represent 47 million Kenyans who have not been “consulted”.

Cheboi also took issue with delays at the IEBC to conduct key boundary reforms and appointment of new commissioners before the next election saying time was clearly running out. The country he added should not be held hostage by the in-efficiency of a few, he added.
