Many of Nairobi’s downtown medical clinics and ‘hospitals’ which often claim to offer “reproductive health services are nothing but disguised illegal abortion dens, a study conducted by the Kenya Anti-Abortion and Kenya Anti Rape lobby groups has revealed.

Lobby groups officials who spoke to The Weekly Vision Online claimed that Afya Centre, Kencom, and Marie Stopes clinics in Pangani had become major “butcher abattoirs” for unborn babies who are “brutally denied the right to live.” M/S Mirian Fatuma for Kenya Anti-Abortion and M/S Fridah Khavera for Kenya Anti Rape said they were working closely with the Catholic Church to expose the “injustice” of killing unborn children. They said doctors engaged in illegal abortions should be arrested and charged.

Abortion in Kenya remains illegal according to the Penal code unless ordered by a qualified doctor

In 2009, aborted foetuses were found dumped on the Nairobi River near Langata with records showing details of the clinic involved. This saw the then First Lady Mama Lucy Kibaki, a staunch catholic, angrily order for the arrest of Afya centre-based doctor Dr John Nyamu, he was charged and convicted.

Nyamu was released in 2014 and is said to have since returned to his bad old ways of killing the unborn making a fortune out of it. A single abortion cost anything between Kshs 15,000 to Ksh. 25,000.

According to the Catholic church communication secretariat, the position of the church remains strongly in support of the unborn child ‘right to exist” saying it is God who “calls people to exist” and that individuals “terminating” pregnancies are guilty of murder.

Abortion in Kenya remains illegal according to the Penal code unless ordered by doctors if the birth process appears to endanger the life of the mother. The lobbies said they were putting together details from volunteers and those who have procured abortions in the city clinics intending to move to court and filing cases.

A survey by The Weekly Vision Online established that there exists a “booming business” at Afya centre and Kencom where special rooms are used for abortion and foetuses swiftly packaged and dumped in Nairobi River.
