The Residents of Nairobi were exposed to lengthy streaming of personality clashes on Monday during the live TV debate between two gubernatorial candidates for Nairobi County. The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance’s Polycarp Igathe and Johnson Sakaja of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Kenya Kwanza outfits repeatedly clashed during the interview.

The candidates, who had initially proclaimed to viewers that they were good friends, soon put their friendship aside and tore into each other at the slightest opportunity, instead of focusing on what they would turn around the city’s crumbling infrastructure once elected into office.

The city’s one-time Deputy Governor under former governor Mike Sonko, Polycarp Igathe was the first to throw the first salvo at Hon Sakaja when he said he was the best suited to serve as the next Nairobi County Governor – “as opposed to a school dropout” a remark, undoubtedly in reference to the controversy now surrounding Hon. Sakaja’s academic qualifications. Sakaja hit-back moments later when Mr Igathe said he had achieved a lot as ‘governor’ during his short stint under Mike Sonko.

The Nairobi Senator accused Mr Igathe of abandoning duties to Mike Sonko after he run away in fear of the cartels based at City Hall, saying Nairobi residents should be careful not to put him back in office as governor lest he runs away scared again

Sakaja declared: “You have never been a governor,” to which Mr Igathe quickly retorted that he was deputy governor while Sakaja had never been one for him to understand the ropes of holding the office. The Nairobi Senator accused Mr Igathe of abandoning duties to Mike Sonko after he run away in fear of the cartels based at City Hall, saying Nairobi residents should be careful not to put him back in office as governor lest he runs away scared again. Moments later, Mr Igathe had another opportunity to throw a personalized verbal salvo at Mr Sakaja only for the Senator to continue speaking even after the moderators told him his time was up.

The moderators Zubeida Koome and Mark Masai had to intervene to force Mr Sakaja to allow his opponent to speak. However, the Senator exited lamenting: “Mambo ya Nairobi ni mazito, shida za Nairobi hauwezi zungumzia kwa dakika moja, baada azungumze naomba utuongezee dakika ingine moja zaidi.” (The troubles in Nairobi are many; you can’t address them within a minute. I ask that you give us a minute more) he told the moderators, however, they declined to bend the rules and reminded Mr Sakaja that he arrived late for the debate.

“An answer to a question is a minute and a half and you can see clearly that a rebuttal is a minute and we did accommodate your lateness. Over to you Mr Igathe,” Mark Masai said. Immediately Igathe went for Sakaja in Swahili saying that the Senator had just demonstrated a lack of discipline which is mostly synonymous with people who didn’t finish school. He said: “Ukosefu wa nidhamu ni kawaida ya watu ambao hawakumaliza shule.”

Towards the end of the debate, the moderators allowed Mr Igathe to respond to allegations by Sakaja that he is under state capture from those funding his campaigns. Igathe said he controls his war chest by funding his political activities with no financial support from anywhere.” To which Sakaja quickly retorted: “Of course, we have receipts of billboards and you know meetings of chiefs, and DCCs.” To that, Igathe said, “I will in equal measure table all the false documents senator Sakaja has cited to the Republic of Kenya and Constitutional institutions tomorrow (Tuesday)morning on my Twitter page.”
