Having sensed he was chasing the wind, Mukhisa Kituyi has quietly abandoned his presidential quest and instead rallied behind Azimio la Umoja’s Presidential candidate Raila Odinga but the monumental blunder of abandoning a high paying UN job is all there for all to see
Whoever misadvised a former top UN diplomat Mukhisa Kituyi that he had what it takes to become Kenya’s 5th president, lied to him big time. In Kenya’s heavily ethnic driven politics, regional segmentation is the order of the day.
As a Bukusu from Bungoma, Kituyi stood zero chance of making an impact in the August Presidential duel that has snowballed into a two-horse race between Raila Odinga and DP William Ruto.
Quite wisely having sensed he was chasing the wind, Kituyi has quietly abandoned his presidential quest and instead rallied behind Azimio la Umoja’s Presidential candidate Raila Odinga. But the monumental blunder of abandoning a high paying job as Secretary-General of the United Nations Centre for Trade and Development is all there for all to see.
Kituyi, a firebrand of yesteryears now seeks to re-invent his youthful years like someone poking through the cold ashes of a fire that has long burnt out! He gambled and lost as his move was but a lone voice crying out in the wilderness. He ignored the time-tested wisdom that a bird in hand is better than two in the bush! He has now been reduced to running around like a youth winger campaigning for Raila Odinga.
The straight-shooting, tough-talking former UN top civil servant now has to peg all his hopes on former prime minister Raila winning the August 9th poll, hoping to be appointed possibly as minister of finance and economic planning. Or better still minister of regional trade a calling that he abandoned mid-way at the UN. Many have wondered why Kituyi threw away lucrative perks at the UN, enjoying total job security to land into Kenya’s murky waters where ethnicity, not meritocracy is at the heart of electoral politics.
On the regional tribal political breadbasket, Mr Kituyi brings very little compared to tribesmen FORD Kenya party leader Moses Wetangula, and DAP-K Eugene Wamalwa who is also defence cabinet secretary, both are Bukusus who have strong affiliations with the late Wamalwa Kijana.
