Mr Kenneth Gagai won a court case against the Nairobi City Council then headed by the town clerk, the late John Gakuo. He now Ksh. 3,000 annually for a licence to operate his open-air books store
A gang made of mostly young people men claiming to be hawkers, allegedly with links to Starehe MP Charles Njagua aka ‘Jaguar’ are accused of grabbing hawking space on the streets of Nairobi at a fee.
They are now threatening to kick books and newspaper vendors from a space he has occupied for decades along Hakati road next to the Central Bus station in Nairobi.
The book vendor, Kenneth Gagai is battling the gang against eviction, the gang has since roped in county askaris in their evil scheme. Mr Gagai won a court case against the Nairobi City Council then headed by the town clerk, the late John Gakuo. He now Ksh. 3,000 annually for a licence to operate his open-air books store. Gagai says he has lately faced a massive obstacle from a group of hawkers loudly announcing their wares just next to his stall with books adding that the cacophony of disorder had disrupted his operations.
A spot check by The Weekly Vision revealed that a heftily built hawker known locally as “Blackie” has deployed other hawkers who he says will not move an inch. He attacked and demolished a book stand Mr Gagai had set up. ‘Blackie’ claims he enjoys the protection and support of area MP Jaguar, now associated with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party of Deputy President William Ruto.
County askaris are said to have taken sides by backing MP Jaguar’s hawkers from whom they allegedly pick bribes regularly. Mr Gagai has vowed to stand his ground against threats of eviction by the hawkers who he claims have no licence to operate in the area. “My licence clearly states am authorised to operate outside Amber house on Hakati road,” said Gagai.
