Double M Connection buses who ply city suburbs mostly in Nairobi’s Eastlands have been banned from Jacaranda after a passenger slipped on the pavement and sustained serious injuries early this week. The passenger later succumbed to his injuries at the Mama Lucy Hospital.

The family of the deceased who resides at Harambee Sacco houses immediately accused the bus company of “killing their son” and sort intervention of area MP Babu Owino. Owino, a no stranger to mob action, was reported to have reacted with venom organising supporters to stone any Double M bus spotted passing towards Jacaranda as they imposed a “no-fly zone”. Owino still faces a court case over the alleged shooting of a DJ in an upper-hill bar in Nairobi.

The family of the deceased Bernard Onyango, a second-hand shoe trader who operated from just outside the entrance to Harambee Sacco houses is demanding compensation from Double M buses and for them to meet expenses towards the ferrying of the body for burial in Siaya. Both parents of the deceased work for KRA and are close associates of MP Owino.

Investigations by The Weekly Vision established that bus managers had engaged with the family about contributing towards burial costs but have reportedly refused to take the blame for the death of the late Owino, they claim was just a normal accident.

A source told us that Mr Owino missed a step and allegedly hit the pavement after alighting from the moving bus, badly injuring his head and ribs. The source claimed Owino was “half-drunk” and was a familiar patron with the transportation company, including his parents.
