Political temperatures in Nambale have risen beyond the boiling point in the contest for the constituency seat pitting high profile personalities including the outgoing Busia County Governor Sospeter Ojaamong.

The Weekly Vision Online has learnt that secretive County Secretary Nicodemus Mulaku, notoriously known as Ojaamong’s Mr Money Bags, is financing fellow clansmen Godfrey Mulanya and at least two other individuals for the Nambale seat.   The scheme to finance Mr Mulanya was however mooted, orchestrated, engineered and is being executed by the outgoing governor, who is himself contesting to re-capture the Teso South seat on an ODM party ticket.

The Nambale parliamentary seat is up for grabs since current legislator John Bunyasi has abandoned it, instead, he will contest for the county’s gubernatorial seat. Mr Bunyasi defeated Mr Mulanya and Kevin Okwara in 2013 before Okwara moved to Turbo constituency in 2017 where he ‘won’ the Jubilee party primaries only to be “rigged’ out through Deputy President William Ruto’s influence,” a source revealed.

Busia County Governor Sospeter Ojaamong

Others in the 2022 contest are the immediate former CeC for Health in Busia County Isaack Obore Omeri, former County Chief Officer John Mwani and Anthony Buluma a largely unknown Nairobi operative. There was also talk of Anthony Itela another newcomer and Standard Group Media personality Kizito Namulanda joining the race, nothing much has been heard from the lately.

At stake are the huge resources running into billions of shillings that they intend to control once their favoured candidate assumes office. Impeccable sources within the Busia County government said that this was a deadly cartel whose principal interests are deeply rooted in lining their deep pockets

The Weekly Vision Investigations established that the contest for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) nomination certificate between Mulanya and Okwara will be a do or die battle since whoever emerges victorious is likely to become MP after August 9th 2022 general elections.

This is where Mr Mulaku the financial godfather and Ojaamong who want to establish himself as the County’s Political godfather come in with their massive political and financial might. At stake are the huge resources running into billions of shillings that they intend to control once their favoured candidate assumes office. Impeccable sources within the Busia County government said that this was a deadly cartel whose principal interests are deeply rooted in lining their deep pockets.

“The situation is so bad that if you speak out against them you risk being ruthlessly sacked as they attempt to protect themselves and amass even more’’ the source added. It is now coming out that Mr Mulaku has allegedly used his financial power to compromise the local media in the county not publish the illegal activities that have been under the radar of the EACC, NIS, and the DCI among others for years.

Governor Ojaamong’s political influence in the Nambale constituency which neighbours his home constituency of Teso South cannot be under-estimated because he has the Abaguri clan bloodline and connections

Mr Ojaamong, a two-time governor is very influential as he enjoys close family connections with the ODM leader Raila Odinga. Ojaamong’s political influence in the Nambale constituency which neighbours his home constituency of Teso South cannot be under-estimated because he has the Abaguri clan bloodline and connections. Ironically it is the Abaguri clan that has fronted Mr Okwara to contest against Mulanya a Mumenya from Mabunge.

This puts Ojaamong between steel and more than just a hard rock because apart from that, the two personalities have been and remain close friends. At the moment Mr Ojaamong is accused of plotting to rig Kevin Okwara out for Godfrey Mulanya in the ODM party ticket during the party primaries. This development squarely brings into focus the clan factor, apart from Baguri and Bamenya the second most populous clan is the Bakhabi who successfully wrestled political leadership from the neighbouring Marachi tribe for decades. The area has since been curved out into Butula and Nambale Constituencies, other clans are Bamudiru, Bakhero, Abade, Ababiran’gu among others.

Mr Kevin Okwara hails from the Abaguri clan while Mulanya is from the Abamenya clan which is the clan of Ojaamong’s choice because of the Mulaku factor. It is emerging that these people are pulling the strings to compel Mr Ojaamong to support Mr Mulanya instead of Okwara who currently wields the upper hand heading into the ODM party primaries.

Reports from the ground indicate Mr Mulaku, County Public Service Board chairperson Asumta Obore and his brother Patrick Obore, a contractor with the County government are all pushing the governor and Mr Mulaku to support Mr Mulanya in the party primaries. Insiders say the four could be fronting Mr Mulanya purely for economic reasons.

Sources also say Mr Mulanya secretly held talks with DP Ruto, a clear indication that he is not loyal to the ODM party but merely out to serve personal interests, a matter that contributed heavily to his loss to Bunyasi in 2013.
