Governor Anne Waiguru has described Martha Karua’s move to join Raila Odinga’s Azmio as “good riddance”, laughing off claims it was a blow to the UDA party of deputy president William Ruto.

Waiguru said ‘there will be no gnashing of teeth or shedding of tears over Karua’s move to Azimio’ “She has no following in Kirinyaga and faces political oblivion” countered Waiguru who in 2017 whitewashed Karua at the gubernatorial elections in Kirinyanga. Waiguru claimed the party Karua purports to head NARC Kenya is an “empty shell” long past its sell-by date.

Martha Karua has a long history of boldfaced rebellion against the powers that be. She once walked out on President Daniel Moi at a function and was booed by a crowd but never looked back

Central Kenya watchers have described Karua’s move as “political suicide” which is pegged on an ill-advised strategy that Mr Odinga might pick her as running-mate.

That they say will not happen as Karua brings nothing but political liability compared to former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth. Martha Karua has a long history of boldfaced rebellion against the powers that be. She once walked out on President Daniel Moi at a function and was booed by a crowd but never looked back. After the heavily disputed 2007 elections, she was among a few who stuck her neck out for incumbent President Mwai Kibaki of PNU as results were announced at KICC.

She engaged in a fierce exchange with then ODM top guns James Orengo and William Ruto who were disputing figures from Imenti central and Tharaka Nithi. The disputed figures saw Kibaki slash a near 1 million deficit to overtake Raila Odinga, sparking widespread deadly violence that claimed 1,350 lives and displacing 650,000.

Electoral commission boss Samuel Kivuiti declared Kibaki the winner, Kibaki was sworn into office after dusk as the country plunged into chaos. In the grand coalition power-sharing deal brokered by UN former Secretary General Koffi Anan, Kibaki-Raila formed a 50-50 cabinet where Karua was appointed Justice Minister.

But she later quit in protest at Uhuru Kenyatta becoming Deputy Prime Minister 9DPM) despite her more vocal contribution in the disputed 2007 elections. She joins Mr Odinga after initially appearing to play tough saying she would not be coerced into joining any side. Many thought she was headed to Ruto’s UDA and Kenya Kwanza alliance. Her move many say could prove a costly political mistake as her NARC K brings little to the table.
