Union of Kenya Civil servants (UKCS) Secretary-General Tom Mboya Odege has received a major boost after a key rival in 2016 polls threw his weight behind him.

Lawrence Nyaguthi is backing the re-election of Mr Odege as SG following what he termed as a “handshake” truce agreeing to let “bygones be bygones.”  Nyaguthi says when civil servants union delegates conference converge at All Saints Cathedral on June 22 2021, 84 out of 128 are likely to vote for Odege.

Odege’s main challenger is national treasurer Justus Mugo who has been blowing hot and cold, at one time declaring he had quit the race. Mugo was spotted recently by a source meeting with the SG at the Ufundi office where “discussions” for a “compromised candidate” appear to have failed to materialise. Mugo’s questionable academic testimonials have been the focus of great attention with many dismissing his Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce terming it a fake.

Majority of civil servants who dismissed Mugo as a “semi-literate” blamed his rigid and poorly informed decisions for slowing down gains that Odege had achieved for civil servants. They include job promotions; increase in overtime and risk allowance, plus universal health coverage, car loans and mortgage.

Mugo is further accused of lining his pockets from sale of old cars the union head office was disposing off and went contrary to the board decision that an open tender be conducted through the media.

Instead Mugo is said to have under quoted prices only to recover the actual cost through “deals” while refusing to pay suppliers. Speaking to The Weekly Vision, Nyaguthi said Odege   “had done well” and should be allowed to complete his projects that have improved the welfare of civil servants in the country.

He said they could now comfortably boast of enjoying two thirds of delegates adding that short of an “earth quake” tectonic shift at the poll there is now way the opposition could defeat the SG.
