Several aspirants in the 2017 ODM party nominations for the Lower Savanna ward race have dismissed the current area MCA Nicholas Okumu for attempting to oust Peter Imwatok as minority whip. Imwatok is the MCA for Makongeni ward in Nairobi, courtesy of ODM.

Last week the Nairobi County assembly erupted in chaos as a splinter group tried unsuccessfully to remove him from office, Imwatok is described by his supporters as a staunch ODM loyalist, progressive and focused.

Lower Savanna residents have extended an invitation to Mr Imwatok to visit them and assess the situation on the ground, they are crying out for services they hardly get under Okumu

In a statement to The Weekly Vision, the ODM aspirants including Julius Owino Nyawire, Nehemia Odhiambo, Johnstone Wamalanda, Selma Okumu, David Odhiambo Magoba, Mama Chungwa and Silvanus Onyango (Onyango Pesa), accused Okumu of playing destructive self-serving politics. Nyawire disclosed that come 2022, they will only support a candidate who calls Lower Savanna home.

The aspirants disclosed that they were extending an invitation to Imwatok to visit Lower Savanna and assess the situation on the ground,  wananchi are crying out for services they hardly get under Okumu. “Instead of focusing on improving services in Lower Savanna he is busy fighting for positions in the county assembly.’, residents say

Area residents accuse Okumu of failing to deliver on his election pledges he made in the 2017 campaigns. They say Okumu deserted the area soon after he was elected opting to stay in Utawala where he built a house. Roads around Jacaranda are in a bad state with deep potholes becoming filled up with water when it rains and vehicles getting stuck. Residents are demanding immediate action from Okumu. The former ODM aspirants say Okumu had joined hands with a group of ungrateful people in trying to remove minority whip Imwatok from office, a venture that failed spectacularly.

They said an area like Soweto which is a densely populated informal settlement has no proper access to roads, running water or public toilets, while drainage is blocked. When it rains people are marooned in houses by stagnant water.

Mr Okumu was once a close confidante of Embakasi East MP Babu Owino but they fell out after it was revealed that he was not loyal to the party that sponsored him, they say he’s a “mole” for other parties.
