Lobbyists Ask President Kenyatta to Jail Corrupt Public Officers

Mr Eliud Tormoi

“All leaders from top to bottom who have contributed to pilferage of taxpayer’s money should have been put to jail as early as yesterday, urgently do something Mr President ‘’- Mr Tormoi

By David Musundi

The Executive Director of a lobby group, Centre for the Restoration of Human Rights and Democracy Mr Kefa Were together with a former United Republican Party official Eliud have said corruption cases that have gone unpunished had badly tainted President Kenyatta’s administration.

“The President Promised a long time ago, those thieves will be taken to Prison, but nothing has happened, just two months before he exits office. Act now and save Kenyans’’, Said Mr Were. He accused public officials in Trans Nzoia County of openly running down the County.

‘’A thief is a thief no matter his or her political inclination. They must be punished and also asked to return all monies stolen from the public coffers ’’, he said. He said President Kenyatta who will be retiring from active politics after the 9 August elections will only be remembered for leaving a legacy of a corruption-free country.

“ The President once confirmed that Ksh. 2 billion is stolen daily, if this money is put to prudent use then there will be no need to borrow money from development partners ‘’, he added

He said: Without jailing the corrupt and forcing them to return what they stole any development so far realized will make Kenyans remember President Kenyatta negatively as he retires. “ The President once confirmed that Ksh. 2 billion is stolen daily, if this money is put to prudent use then there will be no need to borrow money from development partners ‘’, he added. His sentiments were echoed by Tormoi who asked the President not to spare anyone, even his friends. He said the theft of public resources is a big threat that drives away potential investors who feel their investments would go to the dogs.

“All leaders from top to bottom who have contributed to pilferage of taxpayer’s money should have been put to jail as early as yesterday. Urgently do something Mr President ‘’, said Tormoi. Mr Tormoi who is vying for the Kwanza Ward seat in Trans Nzoia also asked Kenyans not to vote for the corrupt individuals whom he said were now using their ill-gotten wealth for campaigns. He said it was a pity seeing politicians inducing the electorate with money during this campaign period. ‘’We can team up together and change this perception that one should be given money to vote. We have contributed to bad leadership by accepting tokenism’’, he said.

He said vote-buying that is going on will end up breaking the link between those who will be declared winners and lead to poor service delivery after elections. Mr Tormoi said elected leaders had failed to deliver on their election pledges because they were busy compensating themselves for the expenses used during the past election.

He said that taking cheap money from politicians during this electioneering period is a curse that may return to haunt the electorate for the period a corrupt leader will be in office. ‘’Don’t accept the 50 or 100 shillings that candidates campaigning for various elective seats are giving you. This is money for bursaries of your children, say no to thieves’’, he said. He faulted outgoing members of the County, Senate and National Assemblies for doing nothing to develop residents.

He claimed that the outgoing leaders were using funds meant for bursaries on their campaigns. He asked the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to investigate the usage of funds and recover all stolen money.
