The Alliance for a Clean Environment has raised the red flag over the quality of tap water in Nairobi. According to the group, tap water in Nairobi is heavily contaminated with micro bacteria and high levels of lead.

They challenged the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), and the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KBS) to test the water afresh for safety standards. Their study revealed that since 2019, water being consumed in Nairobi has not been treated with chlorine which helps to purify water and kill germs.

“Water being consumed by unsuspecting wananchi is full of bacteria and high levels of lead,” says the lobby National co-ordinator Peter Mwangi. The environment lobby said it tested water samples at city laboratories and found high levels of lead, and microscopic bacteria.

Ex Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko accuses the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) of poor service delivery. Sonko says water in the city should be treated after every 3-6 months but the money for the exercise is always “stolen!” “NMS buys chalk to treat water” claimed an angry governor!

Sonko claims water cartels had frustrated efforts to clean the water from the source. He adds that some of the water pipes are in a bad state. “This is because water vendors minting a fortune” had created a “permanent” artificial shortage of water to guarantee the survival of their business” Sonko fumed.

County water boards charged with the task of upholding standards of water have also been faulted. The study shows water cartels have virtually taken over the supply of the basic commodity giving residents few options. Nairobi county city inspectorate health inspectors were found to be doing zero work, as thirsty city residents consume suspect water.

City Hall has allowed free reign for giant water truck vendors and cart pushers to operate unhindered. At one time Mr Sonko’s trucks delivered “free” water to city estates. That was before NMS staged a “coup” and took charge of the city.

A source at NMS further revealed that the pipes bringing water to Nairobi from Ndakaini are in a horrible state of rust! “The water has not been treated for the last 2 years” the source claimed. It is this huge amount of lead that is now causing wananchi skin problems and other water-borne diseases like typhoid and cholera. Angry residents who spoke during the study accused NMS of failing to deliver quality services to taxpayers. “There is no doubt that the water in Nairobi is heavily polluted,” they said and accused Environment Minister Teriako Tobiko of playing politics at the expense of Kenyans. Tobiko’s PR stunts with the Nairobi River did little to ensure water consumed in Nairobi is safe.
