Late Kapkoi Catholic Church Parish Priest Father Francis Xavier Opondo, he succumbed to prostate cancer on Friday

The Kitale Catholic diocese was thrown into mourning following the death of Reverend. Father Francis Xavier Opondo. Until his death, Father Opondo was serving as the priest in charge of Kapkopi Parish, Kiminini constituency. Confirming his death, the Kitale Catholic Diocese Vicar General Father Micah Kemboi said the church had been thrown into shock after the death of Father Opondo whom he said was a dedicated servant of God.

The death is a very big blow especially to the catholic faithful he interacted with during his time as Vicar General of Mary Immaculate Cathedral before being transferred to other Parishes’’, said Father Kemboi, the current Vicar General. Speaking to The Weekly Vision Online at the Mary Immaculate Cathedral Church on Sunday, Father Kemboi said the death came at a bad moment and asked the faithful to pray for the church to overcome what he said was an alarming rate of deaths among the catholic priests.

Father Kemboi revealed that Father Opondo was pronounced dead on Friday and his body taken to Kiminini Cottage hospital. The clergyman is said to have passed on following a long battle with prostate cancer. He died aged 67. Kemboi said father Opondo was an icon of peace and was respected among all communities in Trans Nzoia County. The chairman of the Kitale catholic men’s association CMA and elder Samuel Okema represented the faithful in mourning the late Father Opondo. Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa joined other leaders in condoling with the family, faithful and friends of the late reverend Opondo, saying the Diocese and the country had lost an icon of peace, who preached togetherness and the sanctity of human life.

Father Opondo was indeed an adored, respected and the most revered elder full of charisma. Most Catholics depended on his wise counsel. He was a man who spoke and stood with his word and could not hesitate to criticize and correct those who err’’, said the CS. The CS said reverend Opondo leaves behind a very rich legacy of having sowed the seeds of love, friendship and brotherhood.

He said the Priest dedicated his entire life preaching peaceful coexistence and harmonious relationships among communities in Trans Nzoia. Other leaders among them Trans Nzoia County women representatives paid a glowing tribute to the late Reverend Father Opondo, saying he had served the flock with profound humility.  My heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and the entire catholic fraternity following the death of reverend father Opondo. He used the pulpit to preach forgiveness of sins between all people including leaders. Trans Nzoia senator Dr Michael Mbito also condoled with the family, church and friends of the late father Opondo.

I today join the Catholic Church in mourning a great religious leader whose exemplary service to both God and mankind calls for emulation by all and the sundry’’, said Dr Mbito. At this hour of great sorrow, on my own behalf and the people of Trans Nzoia, I wish to join leaders, faithful and the county in mourning this faithful servant of God. I pray that God strengthens the immediate family’’, he said. The Reverend Father Opondo will be buried on Thursday at the Sirende catholic church
