A public demonstration against Kisumu governor Prof Anyang Nyongo is planned to take place during President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Madaraka day speech next week, sources say. The plan has however kicked up a fresh storm among the local leaders.

ODM leader Raila Odinga is already in Kisumu “preparing the ground” and is understood to be burning the midnight oil to ensure all goes well. President Uhuru will preside over the event on June 1st. The president is understood to have been briefed on the matter specifically on the issue in regard to the demolitions of structures said to have been made to make way for the SGR railway expansion to Malaba town.

Seme Association had in a press statement seen by The Weekly Vision accused Nyongo of “destroying” the economy of Kisumu through blanket demolitions. The Association has backed the demo saying the President must be made aware of Nyongo’s acts of blatant “social and economic injustice.” Residents have accused Nyongo of failing to perform   and are urging Raila not to shield him during the event

The presidents’ advisers are understood to have urged Mr Odinga to ensure a “rousing welcome” for the president and not an “embarrassing” demonstration. Odinga is said to have raised the matter with governor Nyongo for not anticipating the hostile reception that may happen as a result of the demolitions. During a daylong meeting that went on into the night, Raila is said to have accused the governor of planning to “embarrass” him in front of the president probably to serve the interests of his “detractors” behind the ongoing bitter succession race in ODM.

An angry Odinga further accused the Seme Community Development Association of plotting “mischief” during Madaraka day celebrations at Jomo Kenyatta Sports Complex in Kisumu.

Nyongo is accused of further failing to curb growing Covid-19 infections in his county. Irate area residents told this writer that the governor spends most of his time fighting Seme MP Dr. Nyikal as he fronts his business associate Victor Nyagaya for the same parliamentary seat.

The Seme association urged Nyongo to concentrate on building Kisumu and leave them alone to elect an MP of their choice when the time comes.

Odinga is not amused at the gathering storm coming at a time his handshake partner Uhuru is also facing rebellion in his Mount Kenya home-turf.
