The scramble for nominations for various posts hit a fever pitch last week in the country’s leading political parties and alliances as individual politicians lobbied to be picked for the plum jobs.

Political parties had by the end of last week submitted some names to the Registrar of Political Parties who will then forward the list to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for review and possible approval. This development is coming at a time when some of the candidates are still battling for elective seats; some are busy desperately trying to convince voters to cast votes in their favour, while at the same time pushing to be nominated just in case they lose in the elections.

Emerging details from the Registrar of Political Parties show that the Kenya Kwanza Alliance’s Presidential candidate William Ruto and his Azimio la Umoja rival Raila Odinga have already proposed names of their allies, some of whom lost in the party primaries.   The Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader Musalia Mudavadi allied to the KK Alliance and the Wiper Party of Kalonzo Musyoka allied to Odinga’s Azimio have not been left out of the scramble. Ford-Kenya leader Moses Wetangula has not been left out of the scramble either.

According to the official party lists submitted to the Registrar of Political Parties and subsequently, to the IEBC for review and approval, prominent names in the list on the ODM party side are National Assembly Minority Leader John Mbadi and the party’s National Elections Board chairperson Catherine Mumma. In UDA, Secretary-General Veronica Waheti Nduati (Veronica Maina), Narok Woman Representative Soipan Tuya (UDA), Laikipia Woman Rep Catherine Waruguru (UDA) and Starehe MP Charles Kanyi Njagua (UDA) are some of those on the list.

The list also includes Nairobi Woman Rep aspirant Karen Nyamu (UDA), Kajiado East MP Peris Tobiko (UDA), ANC Secretary-General Simon Mwangi Kamau, Nominated Senator Petronila Were (ANC), Nominated Senator Sylvia Kasanga (Wiper), Bomet Woman Rep Joyce Korir (UDA) and Wiper Secretary General Shakila Abdalla. There is also Chama Cha Kazi party leader Moses Kuria, who wants to be Kiambu County governor, he also submitted his name for nomination. These are just some of the most notable names documented in the long list of the proposed nominee by the political parties including the oldest one KANU which is allied to the Azimio outfit

However, according to the law governing elections, elective seat candidates are not allowed to be on the list of potential nominees to parliament, Senate or county assemblies. Senator Gideon Moi’s KANU has, at the top of the list of its nominees to the National Assembly, proposed Mr Conrad Thorpe, a businessman whose name appeared in the PANDORA Papers published by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists in 2017. However, The Weekly Vision could not immediately establish the names of those proposed by President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party to the National Assembly and Senate.

A majority of these proposed individuals for nomination to the August Houses ironically lost out in the political party primaries while others were prevailed upon by their party leaders to drop out in favour of competitors. Parties were required to submit their lists of individuals to be nominated to the National Assembly, Senate and county assemblies to the IEBC by June 25. Of the 83 parties cleared to participate in the General Election, 81 submitted their lists.
