Kenyans alarmed at the growing number of domestic abuse cases against minors

By Jack Cheruiyot

The rapidly growing number of cases in which minors are being killed by their parents or siblings in supposed punishments for the wrongs allegedly committed at home have left Kenyans alarmed.

Some of the people who spoke to us were in actual sense referring to recent cases where a mother in Kisii county battered her young child for having misplaced a 10 shillings coin, while a 15-year-old schoolgirl in Nairobi’s Milimani area, suffered the same fate after she allegedly skipped school to visit her boyfriend. A young girl aged six, died after her mother inflicted serious injuries in a botched punishment attempt.

A middle-aged man who spoke to The Weekly Vision in Nairobi, said that the growing number of cases of domestic violence has been worsened by the Covid-19 global pandemic, widespread poverty, unemployment and harsh economic times.

Unfortunately, he said, the brutality “is being visited upon some vulnerable groups by people who should be their protectors and not assailants” to the point of them being arrested and charged in court for the offences.
This, he said, must stop stressing that punishment of children is cruel when abused and carried to absurd standards that end up in the unfortunate loss of lives of minors.
Parents, he said must find a way of coping with the harsh economic times not to use differences with children to vent out their frustrations on innocent targets like kids.
