The ceremony to be held in Kasarani could see Kalonzo Musyoka declare his support for Mr Odinga’s quest for the presidency next year, well-placed sources within ODM’s top echelon say
One Kenya Alliance (OKA) co-co-principal Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka could be the first to throw in the towel and back Raila Odinga’s 2022 presidential bid, according to informed confidential sources. Mr Kalonzo is rumoured to owe President Uhuru Kenyatta a favour or two is said to have finally caved in to pressure.
Mr Odinga is expected to unveil his fifth stab at the presidency tomorrow in a quest for powerful office in the land that has eluded him in the past. The event to be held in Kasarani could see Mr Kalonzo Musyoka declare his support for Mr Odinga. Well-placed sources within ODM’s top echelons say that he has decided to bite the bullet!
While many say this is hardly surprising considering pressure from President Uhuru Kenyatta, Musalia Mudavadi ANC have termed it as a “betrayal”! A furious Musalia has lately been speaking without mincing words and is emphatic that there is no going back for him, that he will appear on the ballot come what may.
The President is said to have extended several favours towards Mr Musyoka on both official and personal fronts including meeting a huge medical bill for Kalonzo’s ill kin who is currently at a medical facility in Europe
On the other hand, Musalia’s other OKA co-principals appear ready to “deal” and move on proving the time-tested adage that says if you “can’t beat them, join them”! The President is said to have extended several favours towards Mr Musyoka on both official and personal fronts including meeting a huge medical bill for Kalonzo’s ill kin who is currently at a medical facility in Europe. The source says it’s “payback” time and the Wiper leader is ready to return the favour.
It is however unclear if that will automatically translate into him becoming Raila Odinga’s running-mate as he did in 2013. The running mate slot is being coveted by candidates from the Mount Kenya region. Gideon Moi of KANU is said to be all ready to jump on Mr Odinga’s bandwagon while FORD Kenya’s Moses Wetangula is still playing hard to get.
Mr Wetangula is still bitter with Raila for sponsoring his removal as senate majority leader early this year. He is said to have sent feelers to DP Ruto’s Hustler camp while at the same time appearing receptive to President Kenyatta calls to back Mr Odinga.
As D-day dawns at Kasarani, there is no doubt that events marking Mr Odinga’s formal declaration for the 2022 bid will be of great significance. If OKA stumbles and three people defect into Mr Odinga’s camp, then it will leave Musalia Mudavadi aka Macharia and Iron lady from Gichugu Martha Karua to front the “third horse” in the 2022 epic duel.
