The Commission announced that most of the material that has so far been distributed does not include the Presidential ballot papers, only those for the National Assembly, Senate, Gubernatorial and County Assemblies are already in place

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) says it has distributed 90 per cent of polling material to various counties and constituencies across the country in preparations for the August 9th, 2022 poll.

The Commission through IEBC vice Chair Juliana Cherera said the process is ongoing to ensure that everything arrives at polling stations before the due date. The Commission announced that most of the material that has so far been distributed does not include the Presidential ballot papers, only those for the National Assembly, Senate, Gubernatorial and County Assemblies are already in place.

She told a press briefing in Nairobi that the Commission was still receiving more batches of materials from the printers, sometimes daily now and even twice within 24 hours at their depot centre next to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. “At the counties and constituencies the material is being received by our Presiding Officers on the ground accompanied by security officers deployed by the Inspector General’s office to ensure proper security is adhered to and that no tampering takes place,” said Ms Cherera.

Cherera also disclosed that the Inspector General has deployed at least two officers at each polling station throughout the country as well as others who will be in the polling booths or rooms and on patrols on the polling day

She said the Commission was well prepared and more materials are expected, and as soon as the materials arrive, they will be immediately processed and loaded into transport trucks for distribution where they should be all over the country.

Accompanied by other IEBC Secretariat officials, they said that the Commission this time round had contracted the Kenya Postal Corporation to transport and distribute all the materials and equipment to be used in the polling stations all over the country. The IEBC vice Chair said: “We are determined to ensure that all the polling stations shall have received the materials and equipment for the exercise by August 6th, for our officers and the security personnel on the ground to be ready for the exercise on August 9th.

She said that the Inspector General has deployed at least two officers at each polling station throughout the country as well as others who will be in the polling booths or rooms and on patrols on the polling day. The officials said that before being distributed to designated polling stations, 90 per cent of the material will be stored in the Commission’s strong-rooms in all the 47 counties across the country under tight 24-hour armed security protection.
