The curse of living in a crowded slum as a result of widespread poverty is once again rearing its ugly hand, after hundreds of residents of Mukuru kwa Njenga slum lost property to the fire.

The main cause of the fire is yet to be established, but residents of one of Kenya’s largest slums are reading mischief, saying they had earlier been displaced by the police who conducted massive demolition excises that were later halted by the courts.  The dwellers mainly from one major Kenyan community claim the fire is the work of land grabbers who have been on their case for several years on and off by burning down their humble abodes.

Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) boss Mohamed Badi kept a studious silence when residents sent out a desperate plea for material and financial support saying they had spent two nights in the cold with their small children. But being an election year, and with the residents forming a big voting bloc, they might not wait for long before support arrives from politicians jostling for elective seats.

Last month the Mukuru Kwa Njenga slum received material support from Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka after their shanty houses were demolished. Mr Kalonzo accused “heartless” land grabbers of subjecting poor Kenyans to untold suffering saying this must stop.

Earlier on President Uhuru Kenyatta commissioned a new hospital-based in the slum baffling many people who asked themselves as to whom the facility would serve when poor residents were being rendered homeless.
