How ODM Avoided An Ugly Confrontation Between Tim Wanyonyi and Gumo Jr. In Westlands

ODM declined to give me the nomination certificate after I had fairly won the nominations contest-Michael Magero Gumo

By The Weekly Vision Online

The intervention by the ODM Party leader Raila Odinga in the party nomination drama for Westlands Constituency could have saved the orange party from a hugely embarrassing political fiasco, The Weekly Vision can reveal.

The ‘fallout’ was occasioned when the winner Michael Magero Gumo was denied the certificate by the party’s top leadership in favour of current legislator Tim Wanyonyi. Tim Wanynoyi had initially declared that he would not defend his seat as MP and that he was instead set to vie as Governors for Nairobi City County on an ODM ticket.

Mr Gumo immediately filed a suit with The Political Parties Dispute Tribunal which heard and nullified Mr Wanyonyi’s nomination certificate as the aggrieved Gumo threatened to move to the High Court over the matter, a big lesson that political parties in the country must never ignore in future, or ignore at their peril.

“It is from this background that I was forced to file a suit at the political parties’ disputes tribunal to challenge Mr Wanyonyi from being awarded the certificate. ODM refused to give me the nomination certificate after I had fairly won the nominations contest. Wanyonyi did not even bother to contest because he was interested in the Governorship, only for them to throw me out to the dogs,” said Mr Gumo.

The threat from Mr Gumo forced ODM leader and Azimio Alliance Presidential flag bearer Raila Odinga to quickly intervene to diffuse the situation. Raila initiated consensus talks and convinced Mr Gumo to shelve his ambitions, and pushed Tim Wanyonyi to also shelve his ambition for governor in favour of Jubilee’s Polycarp Igathe.

Mr Wanyonyi had insisted that having served Westlands for 10 years he was best placed for the governor’s job. Emerging details indicate that apart from being granted a direct nomination ticket to defend his seat Mr Wanyonyi was also refunded the millions of shillings he had already spent on campaigns. We are not ware if Gumo the son of veteran politician and former Westland legislator veteran Fred Gumo who had won the party primaries after spending millions was refunded his money.

Emerging details indicate that just when political temperature was about to get out of control, Mr Odinga reached out to his political ally, Fred Gumo and together they intervened to convince Michael to drop his quest in favour of Wanyonyi thereby saving the party from an ugly confrontation between the two.
