According to sources at the county offices, Kananu said this after chairing a six-hour marathon meeting with top city inspectorate and public health officials last week. During the meeting, she is said to have expressed concern over the dirty and congested city streets. She is then said to have declared war on hawkers and street families. The governor warned bribe-taking askaris who pick “toll fees” daily that their days are numbered! She insisted that order and sanity must be restored in Nairobi

Kananu warned bribe-taking askaris who pick “toll fees” daily that their days are numbered! She insisted that order and sanity must be restored in Nairobi. The city, she said is not only a major destination for business people in the world but also East Africa’s largest metropolis. The city she said, should lead “by example”! The governor has ordered that garbage be collected and streets swept and washed like it used to be sometime back in the 1970s 1980s and 1990s.

Many city residents have welcomed this move saying over-crowding and congestion were bad for business. Residents have appealed to the governor to physically monitor and inspect progress in the orders she gives.

They accused city-county askaris of running extortion cartels on all major streets where hawkers are doing roaring business. The taxes or licenses that should be revenue for the city to improve services, they claimed end up in individual pockets. Nairobi dubbed green city in the sun is an eyesore with dirty, crowded, unkempt streets painting the picture of a city gone bananas! Open manholes, blocked sewers infested by huge rats, uncollected mountains of garbage, and blocked drainages complete the picture of a city going to the dogs!
